March 20, 2023: Canadians Sam Schachter and Dan Dearing finished fifth at the 2023 Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour La Paz Challenge in Mexico this past weekend.

The pair finished second in their pool and in the round of 16, the team had an impressive 2-0 (21-15, 21-14) win over Commonwealth rivals McHugh/Burnett of Australia to advance. The Canadians then lost to Brazil’s Evandro/Arthur 21-17, 21-19 in the quarterfinals.

Canada’s MacNeil/Russell did not qualify for the main draw. On the women’s side, Canadian teams Mckay/Wuttunee and Megan/Nicole were eliminated in the second round of qualification and McBain/Bélanger after the first round.

Spanish veterans Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira won men’s gold in Mexico. The pair outlasted in a three-set (21-17, 15-21, 15-12) gold-medal match over Dutch team Stefan Boermans and Yorick De Groot, who took silver. A new Austrian duo of Robi Seidl and Moritz Pristauz earned bronze. Nuss/Kloth of the United States won women’s gold.

At a  “Futures” event for up-and-coming teams at Mt. Maunganui Beach, New Zealand, Canada’s Shanice Marcelle and Lea Monkhouse earned a bronze medal after a 2-0 (21-16, 21-18) victory over another Canadian team, Darby Dunn and Olivia Furlan. New Zealand’s Shaunna Polley and Alice Zeimann won gold over country mates Olivia MacDonald and Julia Tilley. There were no Canadian men’s entries.

Canadians win AVP Miami
Living up to their billing, number-one seeded Canadians Brandie Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes won the Miami Beach Open after a final match over Julia Scoles and Betsi Flint 21-16, 24-22 on Sunday. This AVP Pro Series event is not part of the international Beach Pro Tour and does not contribute to Olympic qualification.
