MONTREAL, QC (March 9, 2019) – Zoé Allaire-Bourgie of Montreal, QC once again stood on top of the podium for Canada as she successfully defended her title in the Junior International Cup at the 2019 International Gymnix competition in Montreal on Saturday night. She and her Canadian teammates also captured the bronze medal in the team competition.
Allaire-Bourgie took the individual all-around title with a total score of 54.532 after putting down the top score of the night on beam, the second-highest score on the uneven bars and floor, and third-highest on vault. Olivia Greaves of the USA took the silver medal with a score of 53.666 while her teammate Skye Blakely captured bronze with a total score of 53.332.
“We had a great night,” said Allaire-Bourgie who recently competed as a senior at the Elite Canada competition in Gatineau where she finished third in the all-around competition. “We were really well prepared. We took it one event at a time and we were really there for each other.”
The Canadian team, composed of Clara Raposo of Toronto, ON, Rébéka Groulx of Saint-Hubert, QC, Rachael Riley of Sarnia, ON, and Allaire-Bourgie, took the bronze medal with a total score of 154.463 behind the USA who took gold with a score of 159.463, and Belgium who took silver with a score of 154.530.
“Tonight went really well,” said Riley who was the Canadian novice all-around champion in 2017. “I did my best – there was a lot of good energy, and positivity, and it was really fun.” Her teammate Raposo, who was the silver medallist in the junior all-around competition at the recent Elite Canada competition in February, added that her favourite part of the night was: “Being with the team, and being able to work as a team, and to do really well as a team.”
The competition wraps-up Sunday with the International Finals which will see the top junior and senior athletes from the previous days qualifying rounds competing for individual apparatus titles.
