Auckland, New Zealand – The Canadian Men’s National Team opened its 2022 WBSC Men’s Softball World Cup schedule with a 3-2 win over Venezuela. The red and white jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first and the pitching was able to hold strong for the tight victory.
 
Sean Cleary (Harbour Main, N.L.) got the ball in the pitcher’s circle for Canada, and after allowing a leadoff single, he struck out the next three batters, leaving the runner stranded at second. That fired up the Canadian offence, as Shane Boland (St. John’s, N.L.) and Mathieu Roy (St-Gervais, Que.) each drew walks before Bradley Ezekiel (Harbour Main, N.L.) lined a single to center to open the scoring. Quinten Bruce (Grand Valley, Ont.) dropped a single into shallow left field to bring in the second run, followed by a single off the second baseman’s glove by Bryan Abrey (Richmond, B.C.) to make the score 3-0.
 
Venezuela fought back in the top of the third, getting a pair of walks of their own later followed by a pair of two-out singles by Rafael Flores and Erwin Diaz to bring in two runs and cut the lead to 3-2. In the bottom of the frame, Canada got singles from Ezekiel and Derek Mayson (North Vancouver, B.C.) but an inning-ending double play kept them from adding to their lead. Cleary retired Venezuela in order in the fourth and struck out 10 batters over four innings before giving way to Justin Schofield (Grand Pre, N.S.) to start the fifth, who retired Venezuela in order in each of the fifth and sixth innings.
 
Venezuela put some pressure on in the top of the seventh, getting a one-out single by Rogelio Sequera but Schofield notched a pair of big strikeouts to end the game.

Cleary allowed two runs on three hits and struck out 10 batters in four innings, with Schofield allowing only one it and striking out seven over three innings of relief for the save. Ezekiel and Bruce each singled twice and drove in a run, with Abrey adding a run-scoring single and Roy chipping in with a hit as well.
 
Canada (1-0) will return to action against Denmark (0-1) at noon NZDT on Sunday (6:00pm EST on Saturday). Streaming is available at gametime.sport, with live scoring available on the World Cup website.
 
In other action on the first fay of competition, New Zealand defeated the Czech Republic 3-1, Australia blanked Denmark 7-0, Argentina used a late rally to beat Cuba 3-1, Japan defeated South Africa 11-0 and the United States edged the Philippines 1-0.-SC-

Auckland, Nouvelle-Zélande – L’équipe nationale masculine du Canada a ouvert la Coupe du monde de softball masculin 2022 de la WBSC avec une victoire de 3 à 2 contre le Venezuela. Le rouge et blanc a rapidement pris une avance de 3 à 0 en fin de première manche et les lanceurs ont pu tenir fort pour la victoire serrée.
 
Sean Cleary (Harbour Main, T.-N.-L.) a obtenu la balle dans le cercle des lanceurs pour le Canada, et après avoir accordé un simple pour commencer la partie, il a retiré les trois frappeurs suivants sur des prises, laissant un coureur bloqué au deuxième. Cela a stimulé l’offensive canadienne, alors que Shane Boland (St. John’s, T.-N.-L.) et Mathieu Roy (St-Gervais, Qc) ont chacun obtenu des buts sur balles avant que Bradley Ezekiel (Harbour Main, T.-N.-L.) a frappé une flèche pour un simple au champ centre pour ouvrir la marque. Quinten Bruce (Grand Valley, Ont.) a frappé un simple peu profond au champ gauche pour faire marquer le deuxième point, suivi d’un simple qui a frappé le gant du joueur de deuxième but par Bryan Abrey (Richmond, C.-B.) pour porter le pointage à 3 à 0.
 
Le Venezuela a riposté en début de troisième manche, obtenant une paire de buts sur balles plus tard suivi d’une paire de simples avec deux retraits par Rafael Flores et Erwin Diaz pour marquer deux points et réduire l’avance à 3 à 2. En fin de manche, le Canada a obtenu des simples d’Ezekiel et Derek Mayson (North Vancouver, C.-B.), mais un double jeu en fin de manche les a empêchés d’augmenter l’avance. Cleary a retiré le Venezuela en ordre en quatrième et a retiré 10 frappeurs sur des prises en quatre manches avant de céder sa place à Justin Schofield (Grand Pré, N.-É.) pour commencer la cinquième, et il a retiré le Venezuela en ordre dans chacune des cinquième et sixième manches.
 
Le Venezuela a mis de la pression en début de la septième, obtenant un simple avec un retrait de Rogelio Sequera, mais Schofield a répliqué avec une paire de gros retraits au bâton pour terminer le match.

Les autres pointages lors de la première journée de compétition ont vu la Nouvelle-Zélande battre la République tchèque 3 à 1, l’Australie a blanchi le Danemark 7 à 0, l’Argentine a marqué trois point en septième manche pour vaincre le Cuba 3 à 1, le Japon a gagné 11 à 0 contre l’Afrique du Sud et les États-Unis ont surpassé les Philippines 1 à 0.
