Softball Canada – Barranquilla, Colombia – The Canadian U17 Junior Women’s National Team took its first loss of the Pan American Championship by dropping a 17-7 decision in four innings to the United States in the first game of the Super Round. Team Canada fought back from a team 6-2 deficit to take a 7-6 lead in the top of the third, but the United States scored four in the bottom of the inning and added seven in the fourth for the run rule win.
 
Canada got the game started on the right foot as Emma Dorval (Surrey, B.C.) led off with a double to left and advanced to third on a passed ball. After a walk by Erin Murphy (Surrey, B.C.) put runners on the corners, Abbey Tolmie (Clarkston, Mich.) dropped a safety squeeze to score Dorval. The United States responded by scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning, but Canada got one back the following inning after drawing four walks to make the score 3-2. The Americans responded again with three runs all scored with two outs, including a two-run homerun followed by back-to-back doubles to take a 6-2 lead.
 
In the top of the third, Deanna Grahek (Georgetown, Ont.) led of with a single followed by two walks to load the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly to center by Lauren Benson (Surrey, B.C.) scored a run followed by a run-scoring single to center by Kaitlyn Achtermeier (Newmarket, Ont.). A single by Dorval loaded the bases again with pinch hitter Olivia Goderis (Swan Lake, Man.) forcing a walk to score a run, followed by an RBI single to right by Tolmie to tie the game. Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) gave Canada the lead with a sacrifice fly to score Dorval from third.
 
In the bottom of the third, the United States got a leadoff single and took advantage of an error before regaining the lead with a two-run single. A pair of walks loaded the bases before they scored on a single and a ground out to make the score 10-7. Canada put two runners on base in the fourth on a walk and an error but was not able to score, while the Americans loaded the bases with a walk, an error and a single before putting up seven runs on a string of base hits to end the game on the run rule.

Katie Korstrom (Abbotsford, B.C.) got the start for Canada in the pitcher’s circle and allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits in an inning and two thirds. Rawnie Weststrate (North Delta, B.C.) pitched an inning and a third of relief, yielding six runs (three earned) and struck out two batters. Samantha Ryan (Monroe, N.Y.) gave up five runs on five hits in two thirds of an inning. Dorval led Canada at the plate with a double, a single and two runs scored while Tolmie had a hit and drove in three. Achtermeier and Grahek each chipped in with singles.
 
Team Canada (2-1) will look to bounce back against Mexico (2-1) at 2:00pm Colombia time (3:00pm EDT) on Thursday. Live streaming is available on the Game Time streaming platform and the WBSC YouTube page.
