Diving Canada – Laval, Que.’s Jennifer Abel fell just short of the podium while Beaconsfield, Que.’s Vincent Riendeau secured another spot for Canada at Tokyo 2020, all on Friday at the 18th FINA World Championships in Gwangju, Korea.

In the women’s 3m springboard final, Abel, 27, scored 333.35 points to finish in fourth-place while Montreal’s Pamela Ware, 26, was seventh by collecting 290.20 points.

“I’m very happy with how I was mentally and physically, I didn’t make any major mistakes but unfortunately on my third and fourth dives I made mistakes that took me off the podium,” said Abel.

China’s Shi Tingmao won the gold medal by putting together 391.00 points in the final.

In the men’s 10m platform, Riendeau, a 22 year-old Rio Olympian, snuck into the final, “It was all about making the Top 12, I didn’t dive as consistent but I did some pretty good dives and I didn’t make any major mistakes so that allowed me to end up 11th and open a spot for Canada for the Olympics.”

Riendeau scored 421.00 points in the semifinal.

He contrasted the experience in Korea with having to qualify for Rio 2016 at the last minute, “It’s definitely a big relief because I know what kind of stress it is to get into the World Cup, the last qualification, and not have any spots opened so I’m glad to have avoided a little bit of stress for that competition,” said Riendeau, “It’s not over, this has opened a spot for Canada but it doesn’t mean it’s my spot so I still have to work for it and it’s going to be an objective for next year and I’m going to have to give it everything.”

Meanwhile, Victoria’s Bryden Hattie was 20th in the preliminary with 379.30 points and did not advance to the semifinal.

“I can’t be too disappointed with my performance because I did some good dives,” said the 17 year-old, who along with Riendeau had to wait over a week for their shot at the competition, “Not being at the very start is nice but it’s kind of stressful being at the very end, waiting and building up more anxiety, watching our other teammates compete, that was good, it helped me release the nerves.”

So far, Canada’s divers have secured Olympic spots in the women’s 10m platform (2), the women’s 3m springboard (2), the men’s 10m platform (1), while Abel and Mélissa Citrini-Beaulieu earned Olympic nomination in the women’s 3m synchro springboard.

Saturday will be the ninth and final day of diving competition at FINA Worlds and feature Riendeau in the men’s 10m final at 20:45 local time, while Abel and François Imbeau-Dulac will challenge the mixed 3m synchro springboard final at 15:30 local time in Gwangju, Korea.
