Diving Plongeon Canada – On Wednesday, one day after qualifying two spots for Canada at Tokyo 2020, Laval, Que.’s Meaghan Benfeito and Calgary’s Caeli McKay both landed outside the podium in the final of the women’s 10m platform at the 18th FINA World Championships in Gwangju, Korea.

Benfeito, 30, was sixth-place with 347.80 points while McKay, 20, was seventh with 331.40 points.

China’s Chen Yuxi won the gold medal with 439.00 points.

“A little bit of me is disappointed, that last dive was not good, but overall, being here after the last couple of months, I’m proud of myself,” said Benfeito, who was sitting in the bronze medal position until her fifth and final dive.

Benfeito has also been dealing with a left elbow injury all season. It stops her from locking her elbow making her entries less clean.

“It’s not the performance I wanted but I mean I can leave here with my head held high, go back home for the week and make sure I don’t make those mistakes at Pan Ams,” said Benfeito.

McKay was pleased after her first individual 10m event at a world championships, “Very happy with the results tonight, I know everything could have been cleaner but I was very consistent and that’s been one of the things I’ve been working on. Handling my nerves as well. I was proud to have even made a final at my first worlds individually let alone make Top 8,” said McKay.

In the individual diving events, a Top 12 finish secures an Olympic berth for the country, so both Canadians managed this feat by qualifying for the 12-diver final.

In the men’s 3m springboard, St-Lazare, Que.’s François Imbeau-Dulac advanced into the semifinal, but no further, finishing 16th with a score of 395.20 points.

“Overall I’m pleased with my day, it was my first-ever semifinal at world championships,” said the 28 year-old, who has made the final at previous World Cups, another high-level FINA diving competition, which are not quite as deep according to Imbeau-Dulac, “It’s not the same level because all the countries come [to FINA Worlds] to qualify for the Olympics, knowing that I can do a Top 18, that I can be consistent in the preliminary round I’m positive and I should be proud of it.”

Ville Mont-Royal, Que.’s Philippe Gagné, 21, was 29th in the preliminary with 370.40 points and did not advance to the semifinal.

When the diving competition hits Day 7 on Thursday, Canada’s Jennifer Abel and Pamela Ware will take on the women’s 3m springboard preliminary.
