Working for the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation (KSR)

The Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation (KSR) provides solutions to improve well-being by advancing how we understand and participate in physical activity and leisure. Offering multiple undergraduate and graduate programs, KSR connects the art and science of human movement, performance, and play.

Situated within KSR, Fitness Testing Services (FTS) provides access to evidence-based, gold standard assessments, consultation, feedback and performance evaluations tailored to diverse communities. We provide physical fitness assessments for personal health; performance fitness evaluations for sport and recreation; occupational fitness assessment for performance standards; and fitness testing support for researchers.

With established connections within the firefighting professions, international and national sports teams, club and varsity athletics, our expert team uses evidence to inform assessments and feedback.

Position

Reporting to the Fitness Testing Services (FTS) Director, the FTS Coordinator will oversee the day-to-day operations and delivery of KSR Fitness Testing Services. This includes operation, maintenance, and space management of FTS, including responsibility for the Health and Safety of FTS. The FTS coordinator will be responsible for coordinating, booking, and conducting fitness testing services for clients at the highest service standard. They will be responsible for training and supervising casual employees, practicum students, and in-field learning students.

The coordinator will be responsible for maintaining an outstanding level of client service and student learning experience within FTS.

Duties

  • Conducts fitness assessments across all the health and performance domains of fitness in both laboratory and field-based settings.
  • Make recommendations to the Director of FTS regarding protocol or service changes aimed at improving or expanding services.
  • Conducts CPT and CEP examinations for KSR students.
  • Works closely with the FTS Director and the KSR Experiential Learning lead to provide experiential hours and training for undergraduate students interested in pursuing Canadian Society of Exercise
  • Physiology – Clinical Exercise Physiology designation.
  • Coordinates with the Director of FTS, as needed, to strategically collaborate with external partners/bodies including CSI Alberta, school boards, major sporting events and internal partners (undergraduate programs, facility services, varsity sport programs) in relation to provision of services or other partnerships.
  • Responsible for the training and supervising of casual employees, KSR practicum students and KSR In Field Learning students to ensure FTS and UofA standards and protocols are followed and that the highest level of client service and educational experience is provided
  • Responsible for the duty of care for environment health safety for fitness testing services (including spaces).
  • Works with Director of FTS in coordination of miscellaneous supplies and consumables required for FTS services as well as responsible for the maintenance repair and upkeep of the FTS sport, health and fire assessment equipment.
  • As it relates to communications and documentation:
    • adheres to current communication standards for email, google drive storage including maintaining and monitoring the common FTS email inbox.
    • responsible for ensuring the expense request ledger is completed and expenses are coded appropriately between different units of FTS.
    • manages correspondence for the program and ensures queries are properly directed and followed through on.
    • responsible for tracking client bookings (ensuring that FTS has the necessary capacity) and serve as the primary point of contact for current and prospective clients.

Qualifications

  • Education
  • BKIN, BScKIN or similar Undergraduate Degree
  • Certified Exercise Physiologist (CSEP CEP(R))
  • Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (BLS CPR)
  • First Aid (Standard or Athletic)
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHIMS)
  • Class 5 Driver’s License with a clear abstract
  • Instructor/Examiner CSEP designation is preferred

Skills and Experience

  • Extensive knowledge in the subject areas of physiological responses to exercise, performance & health related fitness assessment, exercise prescription for health and performance related fitness.
  • Extensive experience in fitness assessment in healthy adults, youth, children, chronic disease, athletic populations, occupational cohorts across all fitness related domains (cardiorespiratory. muscle strength, muscle endurance, flexibility, body composition, muscle power, balance, agility, speed, speed endurance, and neuromuscular fitness) in both laboratory and field based settings.
  • Practical experience working in fitness, or health, or sport, performance or occupational assessment.
  • Practical supervision and mentorship experience of individuals with differing backgrounds and practical experience in fitness, sport or occupational wellness program/unit.
  • Knowledge and practical experience of laboratory equipment – general operation, calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Experience in consultation, deficits, needs and goal setting for clients across all populations outlined above for evidence based exercise prescription
  • Ability to teach, instruct and work with educators, athletes, coaches, sport administrators in the community to achieve the strategic goals of FTS.
  • Ability to mentor and supervise a wide variety of students whom might be gaining work integrated learning experiences.
  • Ability to complete bookings/schedule testers/manage record keeping in customer service software and payment system.
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to meaningfully interpret and explain fitness testing results accurately to researchers with considerable exercise science knowledge as well as members of the general public with no exercise science background.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
