The Coach, Team Canada – NextGen Boys (NXB) is responsible for program leadership and the delivery of high-performance coaching to athletes who are members of the Team Canada – NextGen Boys program. The ultimate goal of the program is to assist more players in entering the pathway to eventually reach the PGA TOUR. The NXB will accomplish this objective by driving a culture of learning and skill development to support the development of the young athletes in the program.
The NXB must demonstrate extensive technical/tactical/strategic knowledge about the levels of performance required to perform at the elite level of junior and amateur golf. They will apply their understanding to identify gaps and growth opportunities for players within the program. Once the performance gaps have been identified, the NXB will create a performance and development plan for each player that may involve some combination of direct intervention by the NXB and/or collaboration with existing external coaching teams. As most of the training environment contact time will take place within the context of training camps, it is important that the NXB is effective with planning camps and delivering content both in group and individual settings.

- Motivate and support the growth of players by identifying their individual performance and development needs and support them with appropriate resources.
- Conduct an initial needs assessment for each athlete and understand the key existing members of the athlete’s team (i.e. home coaches, parents, etc.)
- Develop an individualized training and competition plan for each athlete, in consultation with their existing team (if applicable).
- Use a combination of feedback and reflection to gain productive insight into personal strengths and weaknesses. Understands there may be situations where utilizing external expertise can be beneficial to a player’s development and facilitates this support as needed.
- Work collaboratively with an athlete’s identified personal coach towards the agreed upon training plan.
- Provide tactical and technical feedback and recommendations as required.
- Foster open and clear communication between Golf Canada coaching staff (including Integrated Support Team – IST) and Team Canada athletes and their parents through regular touch points, both virtually and in-person.
- Coordinate targeted training opportunities including training camps and, at times, individual or regional group player visits.
- Support players at identified key national and international competitions.
- Foster a culture of collaboration. Build connection and strong positive working relationships with the personal coaches, future college coaches, and parents of NextGen members to ensure alignment on approaches regarding player development. The NXB will lead through example and foster trust by demonstrating required values and behaviours to both internal and external stakeholders. Works collaboratively with other coaches across the player development system to prioritize player needs. Works to build strategic relationships with key stakeholders to foster communication, build networks, increase awareness, and build loyalty to position Canada as a leader in golf. Represents the Team Canada program and is integral in maintaining positive relationships with donors, partners, media, and other stakeholders.
- Oversee IST staff. Directly manage IST staff and ensure they have clear roles and responsibilities to support the program. Outline expectations and foster regular communication among coaching staff. Ensure they are connecting with athletes on their identified areas of need.
- Administration. Prepare work plans, reports, and other documents as required. Attend meetings and activities that relate to the overall high performance programming environment and engage with partners and donors as required. Ensure that program expenses are within budget and the mechanics of reporting expenses are executed according to Golf Canada policies and procedures.
- Upholding Safe Sport values. Foster an environment where everyone can thrive by promoting physical, psychological, and social wellbeing through adherence of safe sport principles. Gains the confidence and trust of others through honesty, consistency, and authenticity. Makes good, ethical, and timely decisions.
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated success in high-performance golf with minimum ten (10) years playing and/or coaching experience.
- Understands the realities of junior golf and uses this knowledge to enhance player performance.
- Remains current with knowledge, trends and practices that are necessary to support elite junior and amateur golfers. Full technical understanding of and a demonstrated ability to analyse all aspects of golf.
- Strong understanding of Canada’s Long-Term Player Development model (LTPD).
- PGA of Canada membership or international equivalent is required.
- Bilingual (English and French) language skills is considered an asset.
NOTE: Golf Canada’s regular full-time hours of work are 40 hours per week, namely Monday to Friday, 8 hours a day and 5 days a week including a one hour lunch. Due to the nature of this position, there will be travel required and the need to work weekends to meet the objectives of your employment.
