What is the Nepean Skating Club?
- The Nepean Skating Club (NSC) is a Non-Profit organization that has been servicing Ottawa for 60 years. Founded in 1965, the NSC is based at the Nepean Sportsplex. The NSC supports our skaters in realizing their skating goals by providing quality coaching, facilities, programming and leadership. The Nepean Skating Club is a member of Skate Canada and Skate Ontario.
How is the Board of Directors structured?
- The current bylaws include 9 elected Directors, one elected coach and one not elected past President.
How many positions are up for election?
- There are currently 5 positions available for a two (2) year term.
Responsibilities of the Board include:
- The Directors have the responsibility for setting direction, establishing policy, and overseeing the activities of the organization. More specifically, Directors must:
- Support the objectives of the organization.
- Attend meetings of the Board and actively participate in decision-making.
- Be an advocate for the organization.
- Read and understand the financial statements and otherwise assist the Board in fulfilling its fiduciary responsibility.
- Fulfill the duties of care, obedience, and loyalty to the organization, as a Director of a Not-for-Profit Sport Club.
- Participate in strategic planning activities.
- Avoid conflicts of interest with themselves and/or the organization.
Time Commitment
- The Nepean Skating Club holds an average of eleven (11) meetings of the Board per year – with most meetings in person at the Nepean Sportsplex at the beginning of each month.
- Directors are expected to serve on at least one (1) committee and attend up to four (4) such committee meetings per year. There may be additional committee(s) work as required.
Eligibility
- To be eligible for election as a Director, an individual must:
- Be eighteen (18) years of age or older.
- Be a resident of Canada for the purposes of the Income Tax Act;
- Have the power under law to contract;
- Have not been declared incapable by a court in Canada or in another country;
- Not have the status of bankrupt; and
- Not hold office in another Skate Canada sanctioned, club, or school
The following people are disqualified from being a Director:
- A person who is a paid employee, consultant, contractor or independent contractor of the Corporation, any of its members, or any organization providing services to or on behalf of the Corporation, and one (1) year after;
- A person in a conflict of interest as determined by the Corporation’s policies relating to conflict of interest.
- Directors must also adhere to the Nepean Skating Club’s policies, which can be found on our website. Following the election, Directors have thirty (30) days to comply with the screening procedures. Note, a Police Record Check will be required.
How will Board members be selected?
- Directors are elected in accordance with the Nepean Skating Club’s By-laws (i.e., during a Meeting of the Members).
What qualifications are we looking for in a Director?
- General attributes such as board experience, knowledge of figure skating or club sport, team player, business acumen and leadership. Specific skills such as Accounting and Finance, Sponsorship & Fundraising, Human Resource Management, Strategic Change Management, and Marketing & Communications
What is the deadline for submitting 2025 Nominee Applications?
- Nominee Applications must be submitted by end of day June 9, 2025.
