Much of our attention lately has been focused on the challenges facing professional and Olympic sport. Ethical crises abound and the discourse has been centering on judicial inquiries, investigative processes, Safe Sport policy, regulations, and sanctioning. Researchers and sport activists are calling for a broader definition of success in sport to include health and well being along with high performance outcomes that excite us and to ‘win better’.
What can community-based sport programming and initiatives teach us about ‘excellence in sport’ and ‘excellent sport experiences’? What is being done in the community sport realms to support prevention of abuse and corruption in sport? What policies, processes, structures and behaviours best characterize positive community sport cultures? And, how might we better leverage community sport principles to inform high performance sport practice?
During our 22nd episode of the Sport, Leadership and Social Change webinar series hosted by Dr. Jennifer Walinga, we will be speaking with:
- Karri Dawson Executive Director, Values-Based Sport at the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES)
- Katie Misener, PhDÂ U Waterloo researching the capacity and social impact of nonprofit community sport organizations, with a particular focus on how capacity can be enhanced to support sport service delivery and foster social engagement through sport
- Haley Baxter, PhD Candidate U Waterloo and hockey coach investigating the experiences of women and girls as volunteers in the community sport context.
