Decolonizing Physical Activity and Sport

February 26, 2021 12:00 PM EST
|

Decolonization is the active process of deconstructing colonial ideologies that view Western ideas as superior while non-Western ideas and culture as inferior. Physical activity refers to all different types of movement, including traditional activities and fitness at the recreational and competitive level. Decolonizing physical activity and sport aims to deconstruct societal structures and forces that allow for system-wide inequalities in physical activity and sport towards Indigenous communities. Although Indigenous people can participate in traditional activities within their community, through Indian Residential schools and colonial policies, these historical impacts have prevented Indigenous communities from participating in non-traditional physical activities and sport. This discussion panel will analyze and discuss how to decolonize physical activity and sport, and how to build wholistic health, wellness and inclusion of Indigenous communities from a strengths-based perspective. You can register for this panel at https://learningcircle.ubc.ca/2021/02/01/decolonizing-physical-activity-and-sport/.
