Winner of Victoria Olympic Qualifying Tournament Draws Group a for The Tokyo 2020 Men’s Olympic Basketball Tournament

MIES, Switzerland (February 2, 2021) – The winner of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Victoria, British Columbia has drawn Group A for the Group Phase of the Tokyo 2020 Men’s Olympic Basketball Tournament.

The Draw Ceremony for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Basketball Tournaments, for both women and men, took place on Tuesday morning at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball in Mies, Switzerland.

The winner of the Victoria Olympic Qualifying Tournament will face Iran, France and USA during the Group Phase.

Canada is in Group A along with Greece and China, while Uruguay, Czech Republic and Turkey have been drawn into Group B for the Victoria FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, which is scheduled for June 29 – July 4, 2021.  

Each team will play the other two teams in its own group (two games for each team).  The top two teams in each group will advance to the semifinals.  The two semi-final winners will advance to the Final, with the winner qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The Tokyo 2020 Men’s Basketball Tournament is scheduled for July 25 – August 7, 2021.

The Group Phase of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Basketball Tournaments will be played in a round robin format, with each team playing all other teams in its group (a total of 3 games for each team).  The teams placed first and second in each group and the two best third-placed teams in the Group Phase qualify for the Final Phase.  For more information about the Olympic Qualification system, click here.

In addition to Canada, the National Federations of Croatia (Split), Lithuania (Kaunas) and Serbia (Belgrade) will also host FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments.

The FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments feature the 16 best-placed non-qualified teams from the FIBA Basketball World Cup and two highest-ranked countries per region in the FIBA World Ranking, presented by NIKE.

Canada is currently ranked 21st worldwide in the FIBA World Ranking Presented by NIKE and is looking to return to the Olympics for the first time since 2000.
