BC Girls’ Elite Youth Sevens team announced for U18 Westerns

Vancouver, BC – February 12, 2019: BC Rugby is pleased to announce the Girls’ Elite Youth Sevens team set to compete at the Western Canadian Sevens Championships. The tournament is scheduled for February 16 and 17 at Foote Field in Edmonton, Alberta.  The team has been selected from BC Rugby’s Elite Youth Sevens Program and will face teams from Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario as well as a Rugby Canada Development Academy side over the two-day tournament.

Head coach Darcy Patterson expressed excitement at the mix of fresh and familiar faces selected to the team for the 2020 edition of the tournament.

“We have a lot of new players getting the opportunity to attend Westerns this year, and leadership from returning players Caleigh Silversides, Chloe Hill-Huse and Gracie McAllister,” said Patterson. “We are looking forward to the challenge of competing against the other Western Provinces as well as testing ourselves against Ontario this year.”

The Girls’ Elite Youth Sevens program has been a key part of the women’s rugby development pathway in British Columbia as of late. Alumni of the program have made waves in USports, Premier 15s in England, and the Canadian national XVs and sevens teams. Five players from last year’s BC team that travelled to Edmonton—Rachel Smith, Emily Meier, Kira Katan, Sammi Thiessen, and Nicolette Duchesne—are currently playing university rugby in the Canada West Women’s 7s Series.

Additional details about the Western Canadian Sevens Championships, including schedules and streaming information, will be available later in the week from Rugby Alberta, to be shared on BC Rugby social channels.
