January 31 – Manitoba Highlights

GOLD AND SILVER FOR OLIVIA!

In the Para-Badminton event, Olivia Meier teamed up with Pascal Lapointe (QC) to play Duc Goi (ON) and Yuns Oh (MB) in the SL3/SL4 Doubles Final!  Pascal Lapointe/Olivia Meier are the current Pan Am Para Doubles Champions, and they didn’t disappoint by defeating their opponents in straight sets 21-11, 21-11.  Olivia then had to play her partner in the SL4 final which proved to be a difficult task!  Olivia would however take home a Silver Medal in her attempt, and she will be working hard to prepare for Brazil in a few weeks!

With Ryan Giesbrecht (MB) and Toby Ng (BC) going down in the Quarter-Finals, Manitoba had no more hopefuls left in the main draw for the able-bodied competition, so we therefore turn to the consolations.

Rylan Ramnarace who plays for Prairie Badminton, defeated John Li (AB) in convincing fashion with a 21-11, 21-15 win to take the Men’s Singles Consolation crown on home soil!

Kevin Barkman (MB) & Brandon Redekop (SK) teamed up and pounded their way to a Men’s Doubles Consolation crown by defeating Taylor Oulton (NB) & Josiah Tong (AB) 21-9, 21-11.

The men’s singles draw saw the heavy favourite and defending National Champion, #1 seeded Brian Yang (ON), receive the upset of the day when he would lose in 3 games to his opponent B.R. Sankeerth (ON) 16-21, 22-20, 21-19.  Though Sankeerth is a widely respected player in Canada, he was entering into this championships unranked, and will have to play 3-time National Singles Champion Jason Ho-Shue in the final.
