Alberta’s Abby Marks finds Mark in Tiebreaker Victory

TOWNSHIP OF LANGLEY, B.C. – Alberta’s Abby Marks of the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton wasted no time in making the most of her tiebreaker match versus Québec’s Noémie Gauthier (6-5; Kenogami).

It took the Alberta foursome of skip Abby Marks, third Catherine Clifford, second Paige Papley, lead Jamie Scott and coach Doug Marks all of six ends to secure a 8-0 victory and a berth in tiebreaker #2 versus New Brunswick’s Melodie Forsythe (6-4; Moncton) of Curl Moncton.

“Good team management and good team shots helped us win,” said Marks when asked about the victory.

Ice conditions may have been a factor in the one sided victory.

“The ice was super tricky today. It was curling way more than it had been for the whole event. We got ahead of it before they did,” said Marks.

Alberta now primes for their second tiebreaker of the event versus New Brunswick on Saturday at 11 a.m. (all times Pacific). The winner of that match will then face Nova Scotia’s Taylour Stevens (8-2; Halifax) in the semifinal at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Manitoba’s Mackenzie Zacharias (10-0; Altona) awaits the semifinal winner in the Gold Medal match at 9 a.m. on Sunday; a berth she earned by being the top seeded team at the conclusion of the Championship Round.

Marks, meanwhile, knows exactly what awaits her team as they push towards the Gold Medal match, but won’t be making any radical changes to her approach.

“Our game plan has worked for us all season. We’re going to stick to it and see how far it can take us,” said Marks.

Draw 20 saw additional seeding pool matches where, on the women’s side, Prince Edward Island’s Lauren Ferguson (3-6; Cornwall) downed Yukon’s Bayly Scoffin (0-9; Whitehorse) 14-3. Men’s play featured the Northwest Territories’ Sawer Kaeser (2-7; Fort Smith) defeat Québec’s Greg Cheal (1-8; Lennoxville) 6-5.
