Taekwondo Canada – Taekwondo Canada announced on Monday, August 21, that Anthony Cappello will be representing Canada in the 2017 Pan American Para Taekwondo Championships. This event is scheduled for August 29th and will take place in San José, Costa Rica. This G4/G2 event will provide athletes the opportunity to earn points and boost their world ranking before October’s World Para Taekwondo Championships.

Anthony, currently the 5th ranked athlete in his weight class, will be competing in the K43 under 61kg category. In this competition, Anthony’s top competitor is 4th ranked Gersson Mejía, who defeated Anthony at the 2016 Pan Am Para Taekwondo Championships.

“Anthony has been working extremely hard for the past few months preparing for the Pan Am,” said Raymond Mourad, Anthony’s coach, “His training has been somewhat intense. He has pushed himself to his limits physically and mentally. His strength, agility, speed and stamina is fantastic. I think he is mentally ready to face his opponent.  He is full of confidence that with his training and keeping his focus on his goal, he will obtain the gold medal.”

Anthony Cappello is identified as a Canadian Paralympic hopeful as Para Taekwondo makes its debut at Tokyo in 2020.
