Whistler, B.C. —The sport of Nordic Combined in Canada will now have a dedicated pathway for athlete development on the West Coast to help inspire a new generation of winter sport enthusiasts, thanks to the hiring of a new program coach.
Nordic Combined Ski Canada and Sea to Sky Nordics welcomed Andreas Wank-Mockenhaupt as the new coach for the Sea to Sky Nordics programs. The new coaching position will spearhead the establishment of a Nordic Combined program at Whistler Olympic Park, delivered through the Sea to Sky Nordics club.
“Andreas’ appointment represents a tremendous step forward for the development of Nordic Combined and ski jumping in the Sea-to-Sky region, and for these two sports in Canada,” said Rick Smith, Director, Sea to Sky Nordics. “His experience at the top level of international sport, along with his commitment to developing athletes, will help us build a sustainable pathway for young Canadians in these disciplines. This is an important investment in the future of our sport and in the young athletes who will take flight in pursuing their own Olympic dreams.”
Wank-Mockenhaupt brings a wealth of international experience and expertise to his new role. With over six years of coaching at the highest levels of German national teams – three years with the Junior National Team and three with the Senior National Team – Andreas has been instrumental in developing top-level athletes – from their introduction into the sport to the world’s best.
A strong academic background in sport sciences and coaching, combined with his own athletic career that spanned from childhood to the Olympic Games in ski jumping, makes Wank-Mockenhaupt a key addition to lead Canada’s next generation of athletes.
“I am very excited to join the Sea to Sky Nordics and to help grow Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined in Canada,” said Wank-Mockenhaupt. “The region has incredible facilities and passionate people who care deeply about sport. I look forward to sharing my experiences while, supporting young athletes, and building a program that connects Canada’s Olympic legacy with a new generation of Nordic athletes.”
Wank-Mockenhaupt’s career highlights include:
- Head Coach, Junior Ski Jumping National Team (Germany), 2022–2025
- Coach, German National Ski Jumping Team, 2019–2022
- Vice Junior World Champion (Team), Planica 2024
- Bronze Medalist, Junior World Championships (Individual), Planica 2024
- Alpencup Winner (Individual), 2023–2024
This collaboration between Nordic Combined Ski Canada, Sea to Sky Nordics, and Whistler Olympic Park reflects a shared vision to grow Nordic Combined and ski jumping in Canada on the West Coast while building upon the country’s Olympic legacies at Whistler Olympic Park and the John Heilig Memorial Park in Squamish.
