AFL Canada is seeking qualified applicants for the AFL Canada Board of Directors.
The Board of Directors is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the organization and supporting the growth and development of Australian Football in Canada.
In their roles, Officers and Directors will ensure effective governance, oversee financial management, and guide program development and implementation.
About AFL Canada
AFL Canada is the AFL-sanctioned National Governing Body committed to promoting, growing, and developing the sport of Australian Football in Canada. Since 1989, AFL Canada has supported clubs, leagues, and provincial associations through program development, resources, national and international tournaments, marketing, youth programs, and other strategic initiatives.
As the recognized AFL International Affiliate, AFL Canada is motivated to ensure the game can prosper and progress through all formats, levels, and competitions across the country.
Desired Skills and Experience
AFL Canada is actively seeking candidates with diverse personal and professional qualifications, experience, and backgrounds. Knowledge or experience with Australian Football is helpful but not necessary.
Experience in National Sport Organisations, Sport Governance bodies, or other volunteer-based National organizations will be considered an asset.

Expectations and Time Commitments
Total time commitment is approximately 4-6 hours per month. No travel is required.
Board Members serve in a volunteer capacity and are expected to:
- Prepare for and attend virtual Board Meetings approximately every 6 weeks
- Play an active role in at least one committee, such as the Finance & Audit Committee, Governance & Ethics Committee, or Nomination Committee
- Contribute to and respond to discussions on strategic initiatives, budget approvals, and other key decisions
- Support AFL Canada’s strategic priorities, including governance, financial management, promotion, and growth
- Serve as an ambassador for the sport and represent AFL Canada within their personal and professional networks
Positions
All positions are open for nomination for 2026. AFL Canada is specifically seeking a Vice Chair and Treasurer.
The Board will consist of a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 9. Going forward beyond 2026, all Board positions will be set at two year terms, up to a maximum of four consecutive terms.
Officers
Officers are Mandatory positions and include the Chair, Vice Chair, and Treasurer.
Chair (Elected to a 1 Year Term as of January 2026)
The Chair will be responsible for the general supervision of the affairs and operations of the Corporation, will preside at the Annual and Special Meetings of the Corporation and at meetings of the Board, will be the official spokesperson of the Corporation, and will perform such other duties as may from time to time be established by the Board;
Vice Chair (Elected to a 2 Year Term as of January 2026)
The Vice-Chair will act as the liaison between the Board and all Committees, will ensure that Committees are working within their respective Terms of Reference, will alternately preside at meetings of the Board, will advise on matters connected to their regions, and will perform such other duties as may from time to time be established by the Board;
Treasurer (Elected to a 2 Year Term as of January 2026)
The Treasurer will, subject to the powers and duties of the Board, keep proper accounting records as required by the Act, will cause to be deposited all monies received by the Corporation in the Corporation’s bank account, will supervise the management and the disbursement of funds of the Corporation, when required will provide the Board with an account of financial transactions and the financial position of the Corporation, will prepare annual budgets, will oversee and supervise office staff, and will perform such other duties as may from time to time be established by the Board.
National Team Player’s Representatives
Men’s Player’s Representative (Elected to a 1 year term as of January 2026)
Women’s Player’s Representative (Elected to a 1 year term as of January 2026)
The Men’s Player’s Representative and Women’s Player’s Representative will have been selected as part of the high-performance program within the last four years and will act as the liaison between the Board and all current players, aspiring players, or former players within the national program.
The incumbent’s role will be to ensure these athletes have a voice, and that they have the opportunity to be informed and to provide input into matters affecting them, particularly in the area of national team programming. This input may be achieved through a variety of means, but the incumbent will ensure opportunities are being planned and announced, not determined on an ad hoc basis.
Directors
Directors at Large (Elected to either a 1 or 2 Year Term as of January 2026)
Up to four Directors may be appointed to the Board. Directors are voting members of the Board and are expected to contribute at meetings, share ideas, participate in Committees, and support various programs and initiatives as required.
Applications
The Nomination Committee will review applications and propose a Slate of Candidates at the Annual General Meeting in November, where the Slate will be voted on by Members of AFL Canada.
An initial handover meeting will then be held in December.
