U SPORTS and BlackNorth Initiative Announce Call for Applications for Athletes on Track Bursary Program

Following a highly impactful third year, U SPORTS and BlackNorth Initiative (BNI) are proud to open applications for the fourth cohort of the Athletes on Track Program.

The program, delivered in partnership with BlackNorth Initiative (BNI)Sherrard Kuzz LLP and U SPORTSprovides both financial support and career development opportunities for Black student-athletes competing at the university level. Designed to prepare participants for success beyond their sport, the initiative combines direct funding with tailored mentorship to help student-athletes build confidence, sharpen professional skills, and establish meaningful networks.

Thanks to the support of Scotia Wealth ManagementCanada BasketballRoots and Wheaton Precious Metal, the program will once again award eight student-athletes with a $5,000 bursary. Each recipient will also be matched with an industry mentor through the BlackNorth Connect Program, gaining access to guidance in areas such as résumé development, public speaking, and other career-focused skills aligned with their personal goals.

Now entering its fourth year, the Athletes on Track Program continues to empower Black student-athletes to excel both on the field of play and in their future careers, equipping them with the tools and relationships to thrive long after graduation.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. The student-athlete must identify as Black (Afro-Caribbean, African Canadian, and/or racialized).
  2. The student-athlete must be enrolled at a Canadian University (U SPORTS).
  3. The student-athlete must demonstrate financial need.
  4. The student-athlete must be affiliated with a U SPORTS varsity team.

Previously awarded winners will be eligible to re-apply in the future for the bursary, should they continue to meet program requirements.  

Financial Component 

  • $5,000 bursary awarded to eight (8) Black student-athletes​ (one male and one female/conference).
  • Recipients are encouraged to use this money towards room and board or books, however, there is no restriction on what the bursary can go towards.

Mentorship Component

  • Through the BlackNorth Connect Program, each bursary recipient will be paired with mentors, based on identified career aspirations.
  • Mentors will include senior leadership & community leaders from our signatories and community network across Canada.
  • Designed to improve accessibility for the Black Community to employment, internships, and mentorship opportunities.

The deadline for applications is Friday, October 3rd, 2025.
