Canada’s Vegard Jarvis Westergård Wins Historic Bronze in Orienteering at the World Games

August 8, 2025 – Vegard Jarvis Westergård has made Canadian orienteering history, winning the nation’s first-ever senior-level medal in elite orienteering. Westergard captured bronze in the men’s Middle Distance event at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China.

This landmark result builds on a legacy of Canadian success that includes Emily Kemp’s bronze medal at the 2012 Junior World Orienteering Championships and her 4th place finish at the 2016 World Orienteering Championships.

The Middle Distance race tested athletes’ ability to navigate intricate terrain at top speed — all while battling intense heat and humidity. Westergård’s sharp navigation, smart pacing, and resilience in the challenging conditions secured him a hard-earned place on the podium.

“The race was super fun! I tried to start in a controlled way, and I think that really paid off,” said Westergård. “Running around in Chinese fields was something new, but I enjoyed it.
My three-week vacation here in China beforehand looks like a super smart decision now with how well I managed the heat. So happy to get the bronze medal!”

Erik Blake, President of Orienteering Canada, called the medal a milestone for the sport in Canada:

“This medal is part of a growing legacy for Canadian orienteering. From Emily Kemp’s groundbreaking bronze medal at the Junior World Orienteering Championships to her near-podium finish at the World Orienteering Championships, we’ve shown that Canadians can be competitive internationally. Vegard’s success at the World Games — especially under such demanding conditions — is another huge step forward, and one that will inspire the next generation of athletes.”

The World Games bring together the world’s top athletes in sports recognized by the International Olympic Committee yet not featured in the Olympic Games. Orienteering combines endurance running with precision navigation using a detailed map and compass, testing both physical and mental skill.
