TORONTO (April 29, 2025) – In response to today’s federal election, the Canadian Olympic Committee issued the following statement:
“The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) congratulates Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberal party on last night’s election victory.
With our shared Canadian and Olympic values, we look forward to working alongside this new government to build a stronger, healthier, and more united Canada.
As we face the biggest challenge of our generation, the COC and the entire national sport system are ready to act, and can be a powerful force for achieving many of the urgent nation-building priorities of this new government.
Over the next four years, sport will be front and centre for Canadians, beginning with the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games and Canada’s first-ever home-field FIFA World Cup next summer. These events offer the government a unique opportunity to demonstrate Canada’s strength and leadership on the world stage, while driving tangible social and economic benefits in communities from coast to coast to coast. Sport has the power to inspire and unite our country like nothing else.
The COC continues to advocate for increased investment in sport under a strong sport minister in cabinet. With the re-investment of tax revenues from single-sport betting directly into the sport system, investment in the hosting of sport events to drive economic impact, tax incentives, and system modernization, this government has the opportunity to transform a sport system that transforms the country. We stand ready as an investor, partner and leader in building a system – and a country – that ensures more young people are able to experience the life-changing power of sport.
