Diving Canada – MADRID – Mia Vallée of Beaconsfield, Que., opened the FINA Grand Prix diving competition on Friday with a sixth place finish on women’s three-metre.
Ying Wei led China to a 1-2 finish with 312.60 points while Tong Ma was second at 306.35. Elizaveta Kuzina of Russia was third at 285.35. Vallée was fifth in the preliminaries with 262.15, third in her semifinal heat with 254.90 and sixth in the final with 267.25.
‘’I felt I could have done better in the final,’’ said Vallée. ‘’I have two new dives which I only started doing two weeks ago at nationals so that was still stressful. And my last twisting dive is usually better than it was today.’’
Olivia Chamandy of Montreal was eighth in the preliminaries and fourth in her semifinal to finish seventh overall. The top-three from each of the two semis advanced to the final.
On men’s 10-m tower, Ling Yang of China was the victor with 446.55, Noah Williams of Britain took silver at 398.80 and Song YUan of China was third at 385.30.
Tyler Henschel of Edmonton took seventh place after placing fourth in his semfinal heat while Laurent Gosselin-Paradis of Montreal was ninth.
‘’It was exactly a year ago I had shoulder surgery and it’s been a struggle to get back,’’ said Henschel. ‘’It’s only been three weeks since I’ve not felt pain. I was pleased with my progress today and it sets me up well for the rest of the season.’’
Competition continues through to Sunday.
