Job Description
Reporting directly to the Director of Hockey, the U18 Female Prep Head Coach is an integral member of the hockey coaching staff. The Head Coach will oversee the day-to-day leadership of the U18 Female Prep Hockey team in addition to supporting the effective delivery of the Edge School Hockey Skill Academy. The Head Coach is responsible for the development of age and skill appropriate technical and tactical plans for the team, and for individual student-athletes, in alignment with Edge’s three-sphere model of personal excellence in academics, athletics and character development. The position also leads the recruitment of prospective student-athletes who are driven to achieve their personal best while competing in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League. The Head Coach will assist in the identification, recruitment and on-boarding of Hockey Skill Academy students, focusing on the growth of the overall hockey program. Furthermore, the Head Coach will contribute to Edge Programming hockey camps, clinics, identification camps, etc., throughout the year.
Key Accountabilities
The responsibilities of the Head Coach, U18 Female Prep Hockey Team include, but are not limited to:
U18 Female Prep Team
Supporting the growth and development of student-athletes in alignment with Edge School’s three-sphere model of personal excellence in academic, athletic, and character development.
Providing day-to-day leadership and head coaching responsibilities for the U18 Female Prep Hockey team, including daily practice planning, game preparation and scouting, in-game coaching, in-season and post-season athlete development.
Facilitate the promotion and recruitment of student-athletes to the appropriate next level of hockey, i.e., U SPORTS and NCAA.Develop and manage all team travel logistics and trip itineraries.
Responsible for hiring and supervision of U18 Female Prep Hockey assistant coaches and/or skill development contractors (i.e., powerskating coaching, position specific coaching, etc.)
Responsible for weekly updates to the team and parent group to support regular and on-going communication.
Providing formal written feedback, specific hockey evaluations and updates to student-athletes and parents in alignment with individualized development plans throughout the year.
Working in conjunction with the Director of Athletics and Programming and Controller on the development of the annual team budget and season schedule.
Responsible to manage team expenses within the parameters of the approved team budget.
Adhere to all pertinent Hockey Canada, Hockey Alberta and Canadian Sport School Hockey League policies and procedures.
Work in collaboration with the Director of Enrolment and the Hockey Director to recruit and on-board appropriate student-athletes to your team.
Work in conjunction with Edge Sports Science Team (Duckett Performance Centre Staff, Athletic Therapy Staff and Sport Psychologist) in the delivery of a student-athlete centric, inclusive, safe, and wholistic athlete development program.
Work closely with teaching staff to support the academic progress of student-athletes.
Work in collaboration with assigned teaching staff in the delivery of the Edge Character Development curriculum.
Direct supervision of student-athletes in your care, while on campus and during team travel trips.
Planning and organization of an annual female hockey tournament.
Edge Skill Academy
Work collaboratively with the Edge hockey staff on the development of the Skill Academy curriculum and delivery of age/skill appropriate training.
Regular on-ice coaching responsibilities in support of the Edge Hockey Skill Academy.
Providing formal written feedback, specific hockey evaluations and updates to student-athletes and parents in alignment with individualized development plans throughout the year.
Identify and recruit prospective student-athletes to the Edge Hockey Skill Academy, focusing on the growth and development of our school-wide hockey program.
Edge Programming
Provide coaching support of Edge Programming hockey camps, clinics, skill development sessions, spring hockey, etc.
Work closely with the Manager of Athletics and Programming on the creation and delivery of a fulsome revenue generating hockey program offering.
The ideal candidate will have the following:
Education
A university degree or demonstrated experience in key accountabilities.
Experience
Minimum 5 years of coaching experience at the U15 level, or higher
Experience coaching female hockey
Demonstrated ability to promote student-athletes to the post-secondary level of play
Hockey Canada High Performance Level 1 Coach Certification
Demonstrated understanding and appreciation for sport in an educational context
Demonstrated ability to identify, recruit and retain athletes
Experience in the delivery of hockey skill development programming
