Vaughan, ON – Ontario Soccer is pleased to announce the bulk of rosters for the 2025 Ontario Provincial Xcel Teams. The only remaining roster is the Under 14 Boys and Girls squads, which will be released next week, on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.
Provincial Xcel team selections take place over the course of a calendar year, where players are identified through the Ontario Player Development League (OPDL), League1 Ontario and through Talent on Location Days for players who are not enrolled in the talented pathway.
The top players scouted and detected are then invited to participate in the Provincial Screening Competitions (PSC) for potential selection to the Provincial Xcel Teams. To learn more about this year’s PSC, check out this recap on ontariosoccer.net.
The Provincial Xcel Program’s key goals include:
- To provide players with an inspirational experience in the Provincial program to ignite their ambition to represent Canada at the international level
- Talent Identification and benchmarking of player performance through quality competition
- Provide the opportunity for possible new Ontario players to be selected for future Regional & National EXCEL Environments
- Provide opportunities for the top Ontario players to be exposed to more post-secondary options, locally and abroad, in a best-with-best environment
“We are excited about the depth of player talent amongst all the age groups, especially at U14’s,” said Bryan Rosenfeld, Senior Manager, Development & Provincial Xcel. “Since the pandemic, the foundation of talented players has grown significantly making the player selection process more difficult every year. We will now have the opportunity to see how these players will perform and meet the challenges of higher-level competition.”
With the majority of the rosters selected, the teams now move into the preparation stage by training with the Provincial Xcel coaching staff. The teams then move onto the Provincial Xcel Showcase, which pit Xcel squads against top-level competition in their respective age groups.
The 2025 Provincial Xcel Showcase kicks off with the U16s, which will see the Boys team take on TFC Academy and the Girls team take on Canada Soccer’s National Development Centre Ontario’s Next Gen Squad in a two game series this weekend.
The U14 teams will play an all-star series with the best players in the province, while the remaining groups, the U15’s and U17’s, will participate in a showcase series against the Quebec Soccer Federation (QSF) Provincial Teams at the Complexe Multi-Sports De Laval in Laval, Quebec from May 16-18.
