Position: Technical Director & Performance Pathway Coach
Location: Based in Winnipeg, Manitoba

Reports to: Joint Pathways Committee (via designated individual)
Estimated Hours: 30 hours/week May-August; 13 hours/week + 90 hours vacation Sept-April
Salary: $40,000

The Technical Director & Performance Pathway Coach plays a pivotal role in advancing coach development and steering the athlete development pathway, particularly within Manitoba’s performance program. This position requires adept organizational, communication, and leadership abilities, as well as the capacity to collaborate constructively with fellow coaches, volunteers, and staff.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Setting strategic priorities, objectives, and delivering programs for all stages of the athlete and coach development pathway for WRC and Team Manitoba, with some support provided to additional MRA club members (Kenora, Pinawa, Prairie Fire).
  • Annual planning and delivery of WRC and MRA programs that align with the priorities and objectives of the performance pathway across all long-term development
  • Provide guidance to and collaborate with the coaching team at WRC, including creating and/or reviewing training plans, coordinating training schedules and assisting with logistics; provide limited similar support to 3 other MRA clubs.
  • Oversee athletes and coaches on the high performance pathway, and ensure proper support is being provided.
  • Lead or manage (in advance if not attending) WRC and MRA programming at major regattas and events, as applicable.
  • Assist with the delivery of the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) for rowing in Manitoba in cooperation with clubs, MRA, Rowing Canada, Sport Manitoba Coaching, and the Coaches Association of Canada.
  • Act as the technical lead and provide technical support for the WRC and MRA, including limited support to KRC, PRC and PFRC.
  • Providing technical guidance to support the growth of the community development programs, including coaching training, practice planning and workshop facilitation.
  • Coordinate a Rule of Racing session for WRC annually.
  • Help foster a warm and inclusive community at WRC, making the boathouse a place that people feel welcomed and excited to be.

Qualifications:

  • Rowing: a demonstrated love for the sport and the desire to create a rowing community that supports joyful experiences at WRC and Team Manitoba. Good understanding of the Canadian rowing system and Rowing Canada Long-Term Development Model.
  • Education: a high school diploma is required; post-secondary schooling would be an asset.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years coaching experience with a positive reference
  • Certification: minimum RCA Coach; RCA Performance Coach is preferred
  • Technical Skills:  Ability to coach/teach RCA technique, basic rigging, some knowledge of physiology and developing training plans, knowledge of basic boat repair and maintenance, experience managing equipment and logistics for rowing programs.
  • Leadership: proven leadership ability, excellent communication skills, ability to foster a high functioning coaching team through collaboration, communication, trust and respect; reliability, coachability, enthusiasm for soft skills and their development.
  • Driving: valid driver’s licence and boat operator licence
  • Safety and Compliance: Standard First Aid and CPR preferred (or plan to complete them), Every Coach Certified Coaching Requirements of Rowing Canada including NCCP Making Ethical Decisions, and police record check with vulnerable populations.
  • Availability: Must be able to work seasonally flexible hours, including some weekend events, and willing to travel as required.  Hours are projected at 30 hours per week May-August, and 13 hours per week Sep-April.  Schedule is negotiable.
