Two Canadian Golf Hall of Famers on the PGA TOUR Champions, Mike Weir and Stephen Ames, are first to add their names to the tee sheet for the 2025 Rogers Charity Classic.
Team Rogers athlete, Mike Weir, will be make his fifth-straight appearance at Canada’s lone PGA TOUR Champions stop in Calgary, August 11-17, 2025. Stephen Ames — one of the key players behind bringing the Rogers Charity Classic to Calgary – has also confirmed he will tee it up for the 11th time in his own backyard at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club.
“Mike and Stephen are two of Canada’s greatest ambassadors for the game and I can’t think of a better way to tee off the golf season than by confirming they will once again be with us this summer at the 13th edition of the Rogers Charity Classic,” said Sean Van Kesteren, executive director, Rogers Charity Classic. “Canadian golf fans continue to follow both of them each week on the PGA TOUR Champions. They are both playing some great golf, and I know will once again put on a show for our spectators, while helping us once again achieve our greater mission of raising significant money for youth-based charities throughout Alberta.”
The only Canadian to win a major title on the PGA TOUR, Mike Weir is a winner of eight events on the PGA TOUR and has one victory on the senior swing – the 2021 Insperity Invitational – along with 13 top-five finishes. Weir’s best finish in Calgary came in 2021 when he was T9.
“This is one of the premier events on the PGA TOUR Champions, and I always really look forward to playing in Canada. All of the players really love it. When we get closer to the event, the chatter in the locker room increases, and I know the guys are going to be looking forward to getting up there, and that goes without saying for me to come home, see family and friends,” said Weir, who was the International Captain at the 2024 Presidents Cup. “I’ve been lucky enough to win in Vancouver at the Air Canada Championship on the PGA TOUR. It’s very special when you win at home. I’d love to play well in Calgary and put myself into contention.”
That holds true for Stephen Ames who is showing over the last two years that age is just a number.
The 60-year-old is charging into the 2025 season playing some of the best golf of his life.
The former Calgary resident has won seven times in the last two years. His three victories in 2024 put him third overall in the Charles Schwab Cup Money List.
The four-time winner on the PGA TOUR is part of an eight -person philanthropic Patron Group backing the award-winning tournament in Calgary since its inception in 2013. To date, the Rogers Charity Classic has raised more than $137.7 million for nearly 300 charities – largely through the tournament’s Rogers Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink charitable program.
“This was the original vision that Mr. (Clay) Riddell and JR Shaw had. When we first sat down as a Patron group, their goal was to raise $10 million a year. I think it is extraordinary to see what we have all been able to accomplish together to support that goal over the last 13 years, and it’s wonderful to see Rogers now build on that wonderful legacy,” said Ames, whose best finish in Calgary came in 2015 when he was T5.
“As players, one thing that never leaves any of us on this Tour, is that we still want to play well so it has been nice for me to be able to be doing that again, but the real winner of this event each year is obviously the charities. It’s what the tournament was made for. It would be icing on the cake for me to be able to add (a win in) Calgary to my resume.”
Last year, Ames added his name to a prestigious group of eight players who have won multiple events in the same season past the age of 60 on the PGA TOUR Champions. The legendary lineup also includes Bernhard Langer, Hale Irwin, Tom Watson, Fred Couples, Tom Kite, Greg Norman, and Andy Bean.
Rogers Charity Classic tournament officials made their first two player announcements just days before helping to officially tee off the 2025 season while exhibiting at the PGA of Alberta Golf Show, March 22-23, where golf fans visiting the Tournament’s interactive chipping area will have the opportunity to chip for an opportunity to win an “Honourary Observer” spot at this year’s event when they purchase a tournament ticket on-site for as low as $15.
