Russia has won both of its matches this weekend; Canada lost 3-1 to South Korea yesterday.
In an earlier match in Pool E today, Korea beat Mexico 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 26-24). Russia and Korea meet on Sunday in Kaliningrad to decide which team will receive the Olympic berth.
Canada plays Mexico tomorrow (10 am ET), but even with a win on Sunday, Canada will not qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Games from this tournament. Teams will have another chance to qualify in continental tournaments at a later date.
“It was a very difficult game, I congratulate the Russians on their victory,” Canada’s coach Tom Black told www.fivb.com. “The Russians outplayed us at some moments, and were strong on attack.”
Russian opposite Nataliya Goncharova was match top scorer with 21 points; Alexa Gray contributed 16 points for Canada.
