Arctic Winter Games International Committee Announces thePassing of Long-Standing Board Member Ian Legaree

(Whitehorse, Yukon – January 28, 2025) – With great sadness, the Arctic Winter Games International Committee (AWGIC) announces the passing of Ian Legaree, a devoted and longstanding member of our Board of Directors. Ian passed away on January 17, 2025, leaving a legacy of dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the organization and its mission.

Ian joined the Board of Directors in 1990. He served for 35 years, playing an integral role in guiding and shaping the future of the Arctic Winter Games and the rightsholder, the International Committee. Throughout his tenure, Ian was known for his strategic vision, insightful counsel, and deep passion for youth, sport, community, and the North. His contributions helped drive numerous initiatives, paving the way for the organization’s growth and success.

“Ian was an invaluable member of our Board, and his presence will be sorely missed,” said John Rodda, AWGIC President. “He was more than a colleague; he was a mentor, a friend, and a true champion of our mission. Ian’s legacy will live on in the work we continue to do, and our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.”

Ian Legaree was known for his extraordinary commitment to the Arctic Winter Games, particularly in the ongoing development of the sport technical packages, conducting morning mission meetings and ensuring youth engagement in the Youth Ambassador Program. He was a respected leader within the organization and the broader community, and his influence will be felt for years.

As we mourn his passing, the Arctic Winter Games International Committee extends heartfelt condolences to Ian’s family, friends, and loved ones. In his memory, the organization will donate to the Ian Legaree Youth Leadership Fund.
