Top Canadian figure skaters look to defend national titles in Laval

The top figure skaters from across the country are set to travel to Laval, Quebec for the 2025 Canadian National Skating Championships, taking place at Place Bell from January 14-19, 2025. Over the course of one week, more than 330 junior and senior skaters will compete for national titles in the men’s, women’s, pairs, ice dance and synchronized skating disciplines. The competition promises to be fierce as the 2024 champions will seek to defend their titles, while other top contenders will be looking to fight for a spot on the podium.

The 2024 men’s champion Wesley Chiu will be going face-to-face with 2024-2025 Skate Canada Challenge gold medalist Aleksa Rakic, as well as Roman Sadovsky who recently claimed bronze at the Tallin Trophy. Kaiya Ruiter will work to defend her title in the women’s field and will have her work cut out for her as she goes against Olympian Madeline Schizas and Tallin Trophy bronze medalist Sara-Maude Dupuis, among many others.

Reigning pairs National and World Champions, Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps, will return to competition after winning their two ISU Grand Prix assignments, marking Deanna’s first-ever event as a Canadian citizen. Meanwhile, Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud will aim to return to the podium after claiming silver last year and finishing third at the 2024 Cup of China in November.

In the ice dance category, World silver medalists Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier will strive for a fourth title amidst strong competition from Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha who recently achieved a career-best fourth place finish at the ISU Grand Prix Final.

Three-time synchronized skating World Champions Les Suprêmes, 2023 National Champions NEXXICE, and last year’s silver medalists, Nova, will all attempt to win the ultimate title in front of what promises to be an electric crowd.

The junior competition will also feature many standout athletes and teams including ISU Grand Prix Final pairs bronze medalists, Jazmine Desrochers and Kieran Thrasher, as well as reigning ice dance champions and Junior Grand Prix medalists Layla Veillon and Alexander Brandys. Top contenders in junior men include David Bondar, David Howes, and David Shteyngart, while Lia Cho is the woman to watch after the 12-year-old set a new Canadian record at the 2024-2025 Skate Canada Challenge.

Junior athletes will kick off the competition on Wednesday, January 15, while senior competitions will run from Thursday to Sunday. Olympic medalist Joannie Rochette and coach Manon Perron will also be officially inducted into the Skate Canada Hall of Fame with a special ceremony, taking place on Sunday, January 19.
