Webinar: Building Cultural Integrity Across the Canadian Sport System: Research and Theoretical Perspectives

February 21, 2024 12:00 PM EST
|

In this episode of the Sport, Leadership and Social Change webinar series, we explore the concept of cultural development as a cornerstone for change by examining the values, beliefs, assumptions and how these manifest in structures, processes, and practices. What can true cultural change look like across all realms of the Canadian sport system? Join Dr.Jennifer Walinga for this important discussion and to hear from experts – academics, practitioners, and sport leaders – in the field of organizational and cultural development in sport.

Theoretical and Research Perspectives on Building Cultural Integrity in Sport (Feb 21 2024 as part of the Communication Ethics Conference):  Join Dr. Jennifer Walinga for this important discussion and hear from researchers Dr. Kristy Allain St. Thomas University, Dr. Joseph Gurgis Ontario Tech University Dr. Laura Misener Western University, and Dr. Eric Macintosh University of Ottawa. Academics have highlighted the influence and perpetuation of colonial, capitalistic, and imperialistic principles on sport in Canada – currently our system is built on power imbalance – and unless we expose, challenge, and change these governing principles the beat goes on. Researchers have produced several articles, presentations, and reports teasing out the issues and contributing cultural factors (Alderfer, Donnelly, Kerr, Kirby, Mountjoy, Padilla) but what are the actual avenues for change – how do we clean up and restructure Canadian sport
to prevent abuse of power and achieve the sport Canadians want? Perhaps sport itself offers a framework, but even when we know what quality sport can look like, there are barriers and resistance.
