Ottawa, Ontario – Climate change and hosting sustainable events has been front and centre for the Canada Games Council (CGC) for many years and will be the focus of a panel discussion at the upcoming Spo Ho Experience™ event in Ottawa next month.
Gillian Orris, Senior Advisor, Sustainability and Impact with the CGC will moderate the panel, which will take a deeper look at how sport is both affected by the climate crisis and also contributes to the problem. Joining her as a panelist is Kelly-Ann Paul, CGC’s President & CEO, along with Oluseyi Smith, OLY, Founder, Racing to Zero, and Bruce Dudley, Senior Vice-President, The Delphi Group.
“The panel will be a candid conversation covering difficult topics, including what the CGC is doing about extreme weather events, their impact on sport events, and how we can work together to find tangible and accessible climate solutions for the Canadian sporting community,” said Orris.
Paul is proud of the work the CGC has already done in this area but admits there is much more that can be done.
“We’ve looked at things like minimizing the impact of athlete travel, including carbon offsets, minimizing the footprint for the Games, and working with our venues to understand local resources and solutions,” she said. “Many of our past Hosts have taken great strides in different areas. We are working to pull all the best ideas together to build a national roadmap for the Canada Games to minimize its negative impacts, and we are happy to share our journey so far at SPOHOX.”
