Mo Zhang and Eugene Wang 2021 Canadian Champion

After 82 weeks of waiting, Table Tennis Canada organized their first national event since the start of the pandemic from September 30th to October 3rd. The 2021 Canadian Championships hosted by Club Réflexe, the Québec Table Tennis Federation and Table Tennis Canada were a huge success. Over 321 entries from 9 Provinces & Territories found their way to Laval, Québec to compete for the chance to become Canadian Champion.

The level of competition was high with the best ranked players in Canada and our three Tokyo Olympians taking part in the tournament. At the end it was the #1 seeds in the men’s and women’s category that took home the gold. World ranked #40 and Canada’s #1 Mo Zhang won the women’s category without giving up a set. Coming in as the best Canadian ranked player, Eugene Wang did the same not giving up a set for his win, but he also had a bye in the quarter final and the final due to injuries of his opponents.

An amazing result for Ontario’s Jessie Xu, who at the end won the gold medal in both the U13 and the U15 event. Local Québec and National Team Athlete Edward Ly won the gold medal in the U19 category. Alberta won 5 out of the 8 U13 category medals, including 1 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals.

A huge thank you to the organizing committee, officials, staff  and all the volunteers for creating an amazing venue for the athletes to compete in, showcasing their talents and highlighting their achievements. We are looking forward to more national events in the near future.
