The legendary Canada Open 2025 will be making an exciting move this summer. After two successful years in Calgary, the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300 event will be held this year in Markham, Ontario, the badminton capital of Canada! From July 1-6, 2025, top athletes from around the world will play at one of the highest levels of competition in the Pan Am region, with $240,000 USD in prize money on the line.
“This is a historic moment for the City of Markham as it marks the first time the Canada Open tournament will be held in Ontario,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “The Markham Pan Am Centre has a strong partnership with Badminton Canada, hosting pre-Olympic training camps and the Yonex Challenge International Cup for the past three years. We’re looking forward to welcoming athletes, coaches, and guests from across Canada and around the world to the Badminton capital of Canada this July.”
The Markham Pan Am Centre is an exceptional and intimate venue, offering spectators the unique opportunity to witness high-level badminton matches in a superb and engaging atmosphere. This esteemed facility previously hosted events during the Pan Am Games, further solidifying its reputation as a premier location for world-class sports competitions.
“Yonex is excited to have this world class event held in the badminton mecca of Markham. We look forward to seeing you all in July to cheer on hometown players and badminton stars from around the world”, highlighted Paul Staudzs, Sales & Marketing Manager of Yonex Canada.
“Badminton Canada is very excited to be in Markham, Ontario for the Yonex Canada Open 2025,” shares Bryan Merrett, Executive Director of Badminton Canada. “With many of the top badminton players in the world competing, the event will offer an exciting brand of badminton to Canadian fans. Delivering a competition of this magnitude takes the contribution of many people in the community, and we are grateful for Markham’s hospitality and support. We look forward to watching Canadian players challenge the world and inspire us!”
Canada will be well-represented at the event, with some familiar faces taking the court, including athletes who did compete at the Paris Olympics last year. Michelle Li, a four-time Canada Open champion and four-time Olympian in Women’s Singles, Brian Yang, a two-time Olympian in Men’s Singles, and Nyl Yakura, a two-time Olympian in Men’s Doubles, will all compete in front of their home crowd.
“The 2025 Canada Open is a thrilling opportunity to welcome athletes, fans, and officials to Markham. As Ontario’s first-ever host of this prestigious tournament, Markham continues to shine as a premier destination for world-class sporting events. Visitors can savour our dynamic culinary scene, discover captivating cultural experiences, and indulge in one-of-a-kind shopping adventures. We can’t wait to showcase the very best of Markham to guests from across Canada and around the globe.” says Andrew Baldwin, Executive Director of Destination Markham.
