Wrestling Canada Lutte unveils Hall of Fame class of 2025

Wrestling Canada Lutte (WCL) is honoured to announce the two individuals who will be joining the WCL Hall of Fame as the class of 2025. This year’s inductees are Carol Huynh and Lawrence Holmes who will both enter the Hall in the athlete category.

“Congratulations to Carol Huynh and Lawrence Holmes on your well-deserved inductions into the Wrestling Canada Lutte Hall of Fame. Your dedication, passion, and impact on Canadian wrestling has inspired generations. This honor is a testament to your legacy—on and off the mat. We celebrate your achievements and thank you for shaping the sport with excellence and integrity,” said Tamara Medwidsky, WCL CEO.

Carol Huynh

Carol Huynh is one of only three Canadian wrestlers to win an Olympic gold medal accomplishing the feat at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 48 kg weight class. Huynh would return to the Games four years later in London and capture a bronze. In addition, Huynh captured two Pan-American Games gold medals in 2007 and 2011 and a Commonwealth Games gold medal in 2010. Huynh won a World Championship silver medal in 2001 and is a three-time World bronze medalist (2000, 2005, 2010). She was just as dominant domestically, being crowned national champion 11 times (2000-02, 2004-2011). Huynh has been an advocate for the sport and remains active in the wrestling community, currently coaching at the University of Calgary Dinos Wrestling Club.

Lawrence Holmes

Lawrence Holmes is a two-time Olympian, having represented Canada at the 1984 Los Angeles and 1988 Seoul Games. In addition, Holmes was a three-time world team member in 1982, 1985 and 1990. He also represented Canada at the 1982 Commonwealth Games. Holmes was a five-time Canadian Champion (1982-84, 1988, 1990) and three-time Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) champion. In 1996 his alma mater, McMaster University, inducted him into their Sports Hall of Fame.

The Wrestling Canada Lutte (formerly Canadian Amateur Wrestling) Hall of Fame was established in 1975 to recognize outstanding achievement and contribution to Olympic wrestling in or for Canada. There are two categories of membership in the Hall of Fame: the Athlete Category, which formally recognizes the achievements of those wrestlers who have represented Canada at major international competitions or Games; and the Builder Category which formally recognizes the contribution, leadership and abilities of those individuals who participate in the development of wrestling. This category is open to any individual who has served or is serving wrestling as a coach, an official, an administrator, a manager or a combination of these functions.

The induction for Huynh will take place at the 2025 Canadian Wrestling Championships (U19, U17, U15), April 26th at the 7 Chiefs Sportsplex & Jim Starlight Centre in Tsuut’ina Nation, Alberta. Holmes will be honoured on June 27th at the 2025 Canadian U23 Wrestling Championships and Sr., Jr. Greco-Roman and World Team Trials (Non-Olympic Weights), at Canada Games Park in Thorold, Ontario.
