Canada Flourishes at Sassari City Matteo Pellicone Memorial Tournament
Canada’s Juniors and Seniors competed at the Sassari City Matteo Pellicone Memorial, a UWW Ranking Series tournament, in Sassari, Italy at the end of May taking home 18 medals.
Both of Canada’s senior women’s gold medal wins came by fall with Linda Morais pinning Kumari Manju, of India, to claim the 59 kg title while 2016 Olympic gold medallist Erica Wiebe closed out the tournament for Canada by pinning 2012 Olympic gold medallist Natalia Vorobeva, of Russia, to win gold at 76 kg in what could be a marquee match-up heading into Tokyo.
Canada’s senior women’s team also took home the overall team score trophy with a total score of 147 points, 27 more than 2nd place Russia.
