Following a successful Bell Canadian Swimming Trials in Toronto, and the naming of its senior national teams, Swimming Canada has also announced its National Development Team for the 2023 World Junior Swimming Championships.
Canada will send 26 swimmers (11 males, 15 females) to the Mediterranean resort city of Netanya, Israel, for the championships Sept. 4-9. More than 600 promising young swimmers from more than 100 countries are expected to compete.
The women’s team features six returnees from last year’s Junior Pan Pacific Championships: Ella Jansen, Julie Brousseau, Kamryn Cannings, Jordan Greber, Elan Daley and Mia West. The men’s team will have five Junior Pan Pac veterans: Paul Dardis, Bill Dongfang, Aiden Norman, Filip Senc-Samardzic and Lorne Wigginton. Jansen and Wigginton will also represent Canada on the senior team at the World Aquatics Championships this summer.
“We expect the world junior championships to be very competitive and we’re excited to name our team,” said National Development Coach Ken McKinnon.
McKinnon highlighted that 76 swims at the Trials were under the selection standard.
“The women’s team spots were hotly contested at Trials, with between eight and 12 girls racing for the two team spots in every event, and Canada will field two swimmers in every single female event. And although the men’s team is leaner in terms of numbers, we expect some very strong swims in Israel.”
McKinnon and National Distance/Open Water Coach Mark Perry will serve as co-team leaders. Perry will focus on athletes and their coaches in the 400-m and above events, while McKinnon will oversee the 200-m and below events. The coaching staff includes World Aquatics Championships Head Coach Ryan Mallette, the head coach of Swimming Canada’s High Performance Centre – Ontario. He will be joined by HPC-Vancouver Assistant Coach Mandy Bell, Junior Pan Pac returnees Carl Simonson (University of Calgary Swim Club) and Scott Faithfull (Nepean Kanata Barracudas), along with newcomers Endi Babi (Barrie Trojans) and Alex Dawson (Grande Prairie Prianhas). The team will stage in Sabadell, Spain before travelling into Israel for final preparations.
