Scott, Côté and Hall end up of at the foot of the podium while Marcotte takes 10th place in men’s mass start

TOMASZOW MAZOWIECKI, POLAND – The women’s team pursuit squad came up with Canada’stop result on the last day of the ISU World Junior Speed Skating Championships in Tomaszow Mazowiecki, Poland, as the Canadian trio took fourth place in that event.
The Canadian team, comprised of Alexa Scott (Clandeboye, Man.), Emmanuelle Côté (Chicoutimi, Que.) andLaura Hall (Salmon Arm, BC), took fourth place with a time of 3:18.982, finishing behind the Netherlands (3:08.736), Japan (3:11.833) and Russia (3:14.320). Provisionally first after their skate, the Canadians were pushed back to second place by the Russians afterthe next-to-last pair of teams to take the start, and then werepushed off a podium result by the Netherlands and Japan, the last two teams to take to the ice.
Canada had to settle for sixth place finishes in two other team events, in the women’s team sprint – with Scott, Côté and Hee Won Son (Calgary, Alta.) – and the men’s team pursuit – with Jack Deibert (Calgary, Alta.), Hubert Marcotte (Pont-Rouge, Que.) and Frank Roth (Calgary, Alta.). Meanwhile, the Canadian men – Cédrick Brunet (Gatineau, Que.), Deibert and Roth — finished seventh in the team sprint event.
Marcotte came up with Canada’s top result in the mass start event, with a 10th-place finish. That was his second top-10 result of the weekend in an individual race, as he came up with ninth place in Saturday’s 1000m.
The Canadian team’s sole medal over the weekend at the World Junior Championships came in the most important category, the Allround standings, as Scott won bronze on Saturday after finishing third in the women’s overall standings.
Canada’s senior long track national team will be back in action next weekend at the ISU World Sprint & Allround Speed Skating Championships, to be held Feb. 28 to March 1 in Hamar, Norway.
