Diving Canada – SHEFFIELD, England – Emmitt Reesor of Waterloo, Ont., nailed his most nerve-wracking dive in the final to place third on men’s platform on Friday at the British Elite Junior Diving Championships.
Local diver Jack Burrows won the gold with 312.50 points and Romano Wang of England was second at 309.75. Reesor, among a handful of international divers competing here, took third spot at 298.75.
Reesor’s best dive was his back two and half which he executed in the second of three rounds in the final. He received three 7.0’s and four 7.5’s from the judges.
‘’I was really nervous about that dive,’’ said Reesor. ‘’It’s been inconsistent for me. My big worry is whether I will kick at the right time or just flop over. To do it the best I could under that pressure was really satisfying.’’
Loic Tremblay of Quebec City was also in the final and took sixth spot with 275.45.
‘’My preliminaries went well but I felt all my dives in the final were under par,’’ said Tremblay.
On women’s platform, three British divers grabbed the podium with Maisie Bond first, Hannah Newbrook second and Saeren Brett third.
Renee Batalla of Victoria showed she has the courage to be a top-level diver as she came back from mishap in the warm-up to place fifth.
Batalla hit her foot on the platform just before the start of the competition executing her inward two and half. In the final, it was her best dive.
‘’It was just my foot,’’ she said. ‘’It was a bit sore and I was a bit nervous doing that dive in competition. I tried my best to block it out. I knew I had to get on with it and persevere.’’
Jordane Legault of Blainville, Que., was sixth while Maika Januario of Terrebonne, Que., ranked sixth in the prelims but only two per country could advance to the final.
