Victories for Pickrem and Thormeyer at Pro Swim Series

Swimming Canada – CLOVIS, Calif. – World championship bound Canadians Sydney Pickrem and Markus Thormeyer posted wins on Saturday to conclude a Pro Swim Series event.

Pickrem, a 2016 Olympic finalist and 2017 world championship medallist, collected her fourth victory this week placing first in the women’s 200-m individual medley in two minutes and 11.78 seconds. She had broken the Canadian record in the event earlier this month.

Emily Overholt of Swimming Canada’s High Performance Centre- Vancouver was second in 2:13.45 and her teammate Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson of Ottawa was fifth in 2:15.34.

Later in the 200-m backstroke, the Florida-based Pickrem earned a fifth medal placing second in the 200-m backstroke in 2:13.17 with Seltenreich-Hodgson eighth. Isabelle Stadden of the U.S. won the race in 2:08.67.

In the men’s 200-m backstroke, Thormeyer, also from HPC-Vancouver, was the victor in 1:59.24, his second top-three of the meet. Andy Song of Mexico was second in 2:02.73, Harrison Lierz of the U.S. third in 2:02.95 and Josiah Binnema of HPC Victoria fourth in 2:06.35.

Mackenzie Padington of Campbell River, B.C., added a silver in the women’s 1500-m freestyle behind Erica Sullivan of the U.S.

Olivia Anderson of Mississauga, Ont., was fourth in the women’s 50-m breaststroke and Richard Funk of Edmonton fifth in the men’s 50-m breaststroke.

PIckrem, Thormeyer, Padington, Overholt, Binnema and Funk are all tuning up for the FINA World Championships July 12-28 in Gwangju, South Korea.
