Women’s basketball teams from across U SPORTS collectively raised $122,698.51 during the 18th annual Shoot for the Cure campaign, held from January 22 to February 2, 2025. This year’s contributions bring the campaign’s total donations to an impressive $2,095,851.80 since its launch in 2007.
Of the funds raised this year, a total of $97,157.61 was allocated to the Canadian Cancer Society, with an additional $25,540.90 directed to various local and provincial organizations to support the fight against breast cancer.
“It has been another great year for the Shoot For The Cure initiative. We had 43 U SPORTS women’s basketball teams participate, reached our goal of raising $100,000, and pushed our grand total for the 18 years of the initiative over $2,000,000,” said Jeff Speedy, Shoot for the Cure project manager and athletic director at UNB.
“While it is very exciting and rewarding to see how much money we have raised, it is also amazing to see so many student athletes across the country engaged in Shoot For The Cure. Their hard work, effort, and leadership is inspiring,” said Speedy.
It was an exciting moment on Sunday evening as the cheque for $97,157.61 was presented at the gold medal game of the 2025 Women’s Final 8 at UBC’s Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver.
“The Canadian Cancer Society is honoured by the continued partnership and support from U Sports Women’s Basketball across the country,” said Doug Kane, director of independent fundraising and sports alliance at the Canadian Cancer Society.
“We truly appreciate the time and dedication to raise funds while managing university workload and varsity athletics. We are proud to be the charitable benefactor of such an inspiring group of Student Leaders. Your fundraising efforts raised $97,157.61; on behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society staff and volunteers and the courageous people we serve from coast to coast to coast, THANK YOU for making such a profound impact on breast cancer research and helping us change breast cancer outcome,” said Kane.
