Calgary, AB. (Feb 10, 2024) — Marielle Thompson (Whistler, BC) and Brittany Phelan (Mont-Tremblant, QC) placed first and second at today’s women’s FIS Ski Cross World Cup at Bakuriani (GEO). Thompson and Phelan were also first and second last week in Alleghe (ITA) and this is the sixth time this season two Canadian women have shared the ski cross World Cup podium.
This is Thompson 28th World Cup win, her first in Bakuriani, and her third win in the last four races. Today’s results put Thompson on top of the season standings.
“Stoked to be on the podium with Britt today,” said Thompson. “It was super special to sing Oh Canada together. This course is fun to ski with lots of jumps and action, and you need to ski well to be fast. I’m looking forward to tomorrow and hoping to ski even better.”
“A third win this season and now to be the overall leader is very special. It’s been a couple of years since I’ve been in this position and I’m hoping that this gives me some more confidence heading into the rest of the season.”
With back-to-back second place finishes, Phelan now has 16 podiums in 70 World Cup starts and currently sits fourth in the season standings.
“It was a good day of racing today and pumped to be on the podium, especially with Mar,” said Phelan. “It wasn’t easy out there, it was a real battle in the finals, but made it happen and looking forward to another shot at it tomorrow.”
India Sherret (Cranbrook, BC) took today’s small final to place fifth place, while Hannah Schmidt (Ottawa, ON) was 11th.
On the men’s side today Jared Schmidt (Ottawa, ON) was 11th and Reece Howden (Chilliwack, BC) 17th.
In other action on a busy day for the CANskiteam:
- Alexis Guimond delivered the second fastest second run to finish fourth at the FIS Para Alpine Ski World Cup giant slalom (GS) in Sapporo (JPN). This is Guimond’s fourth top four finish in four GS races this season.
- At today’s FIS Ski World Cup women’s giant slalom at Soldeau (AND) Britt Richardson (Canmore, AB) raced to a World Cup career best 14th place. Cassidy Gray (Panorama, BC) placed 28th to pick-up World Cup points for the second time in three races, while Sarah Bennett (Stoneham, QC) was 47th in the first run and didn’t advance to the second run.
- At todays FIS Ski World Cup men’s giant slalom at Bansko (BUL), Asher Jordan (North Vancouver, BC) and Erik Read (Canmore, AB) did not finish their first runs.
