Dubois finishes second overall and Sarault third overall; men’s and women’s relay teams both capture silver medals

MONTREAL, QUEBEC – Steven Dubois and Courtney Sarault both reach the overall podium at the inaugural ISU Four Continents Short Track Championships in Montreal on Sunday, with Dubois coming second overall on the men’s side and Sarault third overall on the women’s side.
Korean skaters Dae Heon Hwang and Min Jeong Choi, who each won gold in all three of their individual distances, were crowned the inaugural men’s and women’s champions, respectively.
Hwang stood atop the overall men’s rankings with 103 points, ahead of Dubois (65 points) and fellow Korean Ji Won Park (47 points). Charles Hamelin (Sainte-Julie, Que.) finished the competition ranked sixth, while William Dandjinou (Verdun, Que.) was just outside the top-10 in 12th position.
The Korean standout was captured his third gold of the weekend with a time of 1:27.719 in the 1000m, besting Dubois of Lachenaie, Que. (1:27.897) and Park (1:28.033). Park got the better of his countrymate in the 3000m Super-Finals (4:46.644), a race that saw Hamelin finish fourth (4:49.306) and Dubois sixth (4:57.338).
On the women’s side, Choi finished the weekend with an impressive 136 points. Her teammate Whi Min Seo (47 points) was in silver medal position overall, narrowly beating the Canadian Sarault (44 points), who settled for bronze. Montreal natives Alyson Charles and Camille de Serres-Rainville finished fifth and eleventh overall, respectively.
Choi won gold in the 1000m (1:32.712), defeating Sarault (1:33.014) and Alang Kim of China (1:33.108) on the podium. She then finished the 3000m superfinals with a two lap lead (5:17.130), ahead of Sarault who was fifth (5:36.851) and Charles who was seventh (5:38.073).
Along with a silver and bronze in the overall rankings, Canada finished the competition with five silver and one bronze in individual distances and two silver medals in the relay races.
Pascal Dion (Montreal, Que.) and Cédrik Blais (Châteauguay, Que.) joined Dubois and Hamelin in the men’s relay, who earned silver behind Korea and ahead of the United States, with a time of 6:58.892. The women’s relay saw Sarault, Charles, Claudia Gagnon (La Baie, Que.) and Danaé Blais (Châteauguay, Que.), the same group that won gold at the 2018 ISU World Junior Championships, earn silver this time around, with Korea taking gold and China bronze.
The Canadian short track team has three international events remaining this season, starting with the ISU World Cup Short Track from Dresden, Germany from February 7-9.
