Snowshoe Canada Kicks Off 2021 Membership with a Virtual Event for Everyone!

Snowshoe Canada, with the help of SnowReg, is ready to kick off their 2021 membership!  With the effects of Covid-19, many have lost the ability to partake in their usual organized sporting events and activities, which are on hold due to the need to remain physically distant. Enter snowshoeing: a sport that gets you into the great outdoors, is fun for all ages and activity levels, and keeps participants physically distant.

Snowshoe Canada, the governing body for all snowshoe-related activities in Canada, has seen a major resurgence in interest this winter. To help encourage both newcomers and experienced snowshoe athletes alike, they have set up virtual event experiences that kicks off on January 1st!

What could be better than walking or running through the fluffy white stuff and taking advantage of our incredible parks system? Add the competition and camaraderie that comes from a virtual event, and there is the potential for many to embrace this active and fun pastime, and that is what Snowshoe Canada is all about.

“Our mandate is to grow the sport by encouraging organized snowshoe events that allow people of all abilities to engage in the activity,” says David Robinson, Executive Director. “Snowshoeing is an excellent winter activity that is inexpensive to get into and provides excellent physical and mental exercise which helps maintain good health during the winter months.”

Snowshoe Canada’s partners at SnowReg couldn’t agree more! “Physical activity is an important way to stay physically healthy, but it also helps improve mental health and reduce anxiety, which is key in these uncertain times.” says Rupert May, Co-Founder. “We are so thrilled to power Snowshoe Canada’s 2021 Virtual Event, which will encourage so many to stay active and get into nature during the winter months!”

More about Snowshoe Canada’s Virtual Event

Beginning Jan. 1, 2021, and running until March 21, anyone living in Canada can participate in the new Snowshoe Canada virtual event. To participate anybody of any age or ability can go to snowshoecanada.ca and register using Interpodia’s SnowReg platform.

“The idea of this virtual event is to allow anyone anywhere in Canada to participate in snowshoeing by doing their choice of three different distances 2K, 5K or 10K,” Robinson says.

Participants can complete the distances anytime, anywhere, and most importantly you can complete the distance and submit your record as many times as you like. So if you do it weekly, you can see your improvements week over week.

This event is ALL about encouraging participation, getting people moving, and recognizing everyone’s hard work. Everyone’s recorded entries will be displayed on the Snowshoe Canada website, and finishers will also receive a finishers medal (one per person) and a swag item!

Starting Out? Tips for Beginners

The best spots to snowshoe in Canada are ski resorts, municipal, provincial or federally owned parks. Most of these places offer groomed and maintained trails that are well marked. They usually offer rentals and a chalet for changing, getting warm, and having a snack. Though please check ahead, as some of these services may be affected by your local covid protocols.

At the end of the day, snowshoeing is a wonderful way to get outside during the winter, allowing you to connect with nature while getting some great exercise! We hope to see you on the mountain.
