OTTAWA, ON – Following the recent completion of the third stage of the World Archery World Cup, Archery Canada is pleased to announce the recurve team that will be heading to the 2023 World Archery Championships in Berlin, Germany from July 31 to August 6, 2023. The team was selected based on results from the World Championships Recurve Selection Camp, which was held back in mid-May.
A team of three (3) men and three (3) women will represent Canada to compete in the individual recurve categories, as well as the corresponding team and mixed team events. The athletes named are as follows:
- Kristine Esebua (ON)
- Virginie Chénier (QC)
- Stephanie Barrett (ON)
- Eric Peters (ON)
- Crispin Duenas (ON)
- Devaang Gupta (ON)
The coaching staff accompanying the recurve team are:
- Ron van der Hoff, Interim National Coach
- Soha Mahmoud, Junior National Coach
- Joe Leszner, Mental Performance Consultant
The men’s team includes Eric Peters, who placed first at the selection camp in May, as well as fifth at the first stage of the World Cup in Antalya, TUR earlier this year. Crispin Duenas has ten previous World Championships appearances under his belt, as well as four Olympic Games and so brings a wealth of experience with him. Devaang Gupta is the youngest on the team but is ready and capable to accept the challenge of World Championships. He most recently competed at the World Cup in Medellin, alongside Duenas and Peters to make up the men’s contingency.
The women bring a lot of experience with them to Berlin. Kristine Esebua earned the top spot at the selection camp and shot a strong score to finish 14th out of 84 archers in the qualification round at the World Cup in Colombia. This will be the fifth Senior World Championships for Virginie Chénier, who has a wide range of experience from across senior and youth level competition. Stephanie Barrett will be attending her second World Championship event in Berlin, bringing with her experience from shooting in the previous 2021 World Championships and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, as well as many World Cup stages. The women just shot together as a team in Medellin, so the organization and the community looks forward to seeing that again.
The World Championships are an incredibly important event, gaining further importance as it is a pre-Olympic year. This event, the largest archery-only competition, acts as one of the key qualification opportunities to earn quota spots for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The compound team that will represent Canada will be announced later this week to round out the full contingent who will be in Berlin.
