Shane Wright to Captain Team Canada at 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship

ST. STEPHEN, N.B. – Hockey Canada has announced that Shane Wright (Burlington, Ont./Seattle and Kingston, NHL and OHL) will wear the ‘C’ for Canada’s National Junior Team at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship, Dec.26-Jan. 5 in Halifax, N.S., and Moncton, N.B.

2022 World Juniors gold medallists Ethan Del Mastro (Freelton, Ont./Mississauga, OHL), Nathan Gaucher (Richelieu, Que./Québec, QMJHL) and Logan Stankoven (Kamloops, B.C./Kamloops, WHL), as well as Dylan Guenther (Edmonton, Alta./Arizona and Edmonton Oil Kings, NHL and WHL), will share responsibilities as alternate captains.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to represent Canada on home ice at the World Juniors, and it is a true honour to be named captain on a team with so many great players and leaders,” Wright said. “Ethan, Nathan, Dylan and Logan are deserving of this recognition, and I look forward to contributing to the team’s success with them as part of the leadership group. We are excited to play in front of Canadian fans in Halifax and Moncton as we look to defend gold.”

Canada announced its 22-player roster on Dec. 12 following a four-day selection camp that included a pair of games against a team of U SPORTS all-stars. It will kick off the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship on Boxing Day against Czechia, and will also play Germany on Dec. 28, Austria on Dec. 29 and Sweden on Dec. 31 to wrap up preliminary-round action. All Team Canada games will be played at 7:30 p.m. AT/6:30 p.m. ET. Canada will also face off against Switzerland on Dec. 19, Slovakia on Dec. 21 and Finland on Dec. 23 as part of its pre-tournament schedule.
