Recap: Toronto’s Beach Nationals Weekend

August 19, 2025 – This past weekend, Volleyball Canada’s Beach National Championships, presented by Mikasa, returned to Ashbridge’s Bay in Toronto, bringing together over 320 youth and senior teams from across the country to compete for the title of national champion.

The annual event featured age divisions from 14U – 20U as well as senior men’s and women’s teams competing at the highest level of domestic beach volleyball. To raise the stakes, senior teams competed for a share of a $26,000 prize purse.

Senior Division Highlights:

Men’s Final
Guillaume Rivest and Jacob van Geel defeated Tynan Gannett and Luke de Greeff in a thrilling three-set battle. The final was equally back and forth, with both sides trading points and momentum. Rivest and van Geel gradually edged ahead late in the third set, though Gannett and de Greeff stayed close and even led 13-12 after a clutch ace from de Greeff. In the end, Rivest and van Geel rallied to claim the next three points and the gold medal.

Bronze Match
Rouzbeh Rahnavard and Dylan Devesceri captured bronze with a 2-1 win over Cameron Chadwick and Robert Kemp. The opening set went to Chadwick and Kemp, who held steady momentum. However, Rahnavard and Devesceri raised their level in the second, mixing precise placement with powerful shots that exposed gaps in their opponents’ defense. Carrying that momentum into the third, they sealed the match and secured a spot on the podium.

Women’s Final
Molly McBain and Kelsey Veltman took home gold after an epic three-set showdown against Akash Grewal and Amy Ozee. The teams traded powerful swings, well-placed aces, and relentless digs throughout the final. Grewal and Ozee looked confident early, winning the first set. The second set was a tense, back-and-forth battle that extended into extra points, with McBain and Veltman edging it out 23-21. In the deciding set, McBain and Veltman executed with precision—mixing roll shots, blocks, and kills—to close out the win 15-10.

Bronze Match
Ruby Sorra and Mikayla Law-Heese earned bronze with a dominant straight-sets win (21-13, 21-10) over Ruby Cochrane and Sophie Hancock. Their strong serving pressure, relentless defense, and powerful attacks proved too much for their opponents, securing them a spot on the podium.

Youth Division Recap
Athletes in the 14U to 20U divisions showcased Canada’s next generation of beach volleyball talent, competing in full tournament brackets that culminated in podium presentations for gold, silver, and bronze in each category.
