The Sport for Life Society is calling on leaders from across the sport, recreation, education, and health sectors to share their leading-edge work, inventive programming, best practices, research, and/or findings at the 2021 Virtual Sport for Life Canadian Summit. The Summit will be delivered virtually across a total of six days, from January 26 through 28 and from February 2 through 4.
The 2021 Virtual Sport for Life Canadian Summit theme is “Pathway to Policy”. Often the activation of Long-Term Development and physical literacy relies on a champion or individuals who have bought in and fully understand the importance of quality sport principles. But when these people leave, will quality sport and physical literacy be sustained? In the journey to 2021, the core concepts of Long-Term Development including physical literacy, quality sport, inclusion, and lifelong accessibility are becoming the new normal in programming sport and physical activity. Now we need to embed Long-Term Development policies into all sport- and physical activity-related organizations – from local to national, and throughout the health and education sectors. The time is now to move beyond being dependent on individual champions to where quality experiences FOR ALL are entrenched within policies to ensure organizations sustain best practices.
The Summit will feature keynotes speakers, individual and Citius Vocem
presentations. The streams to consider when submitting a presentation include:
· Foundation of the Pathway: Physical literacy is the foundation of an individual’s lifelong journey through sport and physical activity. How has physical literacy been embedded in policy? It is early days but some innovative actions are starting to emerge. This stream will focus on current research, applications, and best practices for embedding physical literacy within recreation, education, and health settings around the world.
· The Athlete’s Pathway: Every athlete follows a pathway – from entry into physical activity and sport through to the pursuit of excellence and beyond – but not all pathways are created equal. Quality sport, based on Long-Term Development principles and key factors, is a pathway designed to maximize the opportunity for each athlete to flourish. This stream will feature research, practical implementation, and success stories from across the national and global sport sector, considering all facets of quality sport delivery.
· Pathway for a Healthy and Active Life:The development of physical literacy and involvement in quality sport and physical activity environments sets people on course to live healthy and active lifestyles. This steam will engage participants in a discussion about physical activity and health across the life course, using real life examples of how change occurs and becomes policy (i.e. from concept to entrenchment) from experts and practitioners on the ground in a range of settings.
· Pathway for All: We cannot move forward together if we leave anybody behind. Sport for Life’s mandate to mobilize physical literacy and quality sport opportunities for everyone cannot be realized without the participation of all These people include under-represented groups such as women and girls, people with disabilities, Indigenous populations, people of colour, the LGBTQI2S community, and newcomers to Canada. This stream will feature innovative actions and best practices for ensuring no one is left behind.
Quality Sport Contributing to Sustainable Development Goals: The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice. To be relevant in the future, sport needs to contribute to the SDGs. This stream will feature examples and theories for how sport can do just that.
Francophone Days
We invite Francophones across Canada to participate in the 2021 Virtual Sport for Life Canadian Summit. The days of January 28 and 29 (there will only be a second day if we get enough abstracts) will be held in French under the theme Pathway to Policy. The different streams topics will be the same as in English: Quality Sport Contributing to Sustainable Development Goals, Foundation of the Pathway, The Athlete’s Pathway, Pathway for a Healthy and Active Life and Pathway for all.
Organized jointly by Sport for Life and the Réseau accès participation, this event will bring together Francophone sport and physical activity leaders who are committed to advancing physical literacy and quality sport in Canada. This exchange of knowledge will help strengthen ties between Quebecers and Francophones from coast to coast to coast.
