Former military pilot counted on to lead diverse and experienced Board focused on excellence
VICTORIAPeter McCrory has been elected to lead Triathlon Canadas Board of Directors with a focus on shaping a future that sees more high-performance triathletes on the international podium while providing an accessible and safe opportunity for all Canadians to swim, bike and run.
The Chair of Triathlon Canadas Governance Committee since 2019, McCrory brings a wealth of sport and corporate leadership experience to the Board. Currently the Director of the Olympic Oval at the University of Calgary, McCrory has worked closely with Sport Canada, Own the Podium, Canadian Sport Institutes, and public office fundraising organizations alongside more than 35 clubs, their coaches and their Boards while holding executive positions with sports venues in Canadas Olympic and Paralympic community based in his hometown of Calgary.
It is an incredible honour to have the opportunity to lead the Board of Directors for a sport that has been in my blood since the age of 15. This is an exciting, yet critical time, in the history of Triathlon Canada, said McCrory, who added he will continue working tirelessly with the Board to create a unified Triathlon Canada Nation, ensuring financial stability coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic and to providing strong governance.
We are in a good place both on and off the field of play, but triathlon is still a relatively young sport compared to others and we need to continue to be innovative and challenge ourselves as a community across the country if we truly want to achieve excellence at all levels.
Prior to working at the Olympic Oval, McCrory was accountable for the operational deliverly of more than $4 million in revenue for the Repsol Sport Centre in Calgary a home training centre for many of Canadas summer and winter sport athletes in the Olympic city.
In addition to sport and recreation, McCrory has proven experience in leading teams to deliver business outcomes across a number of industries including commercial aviation, oil and gas, healthcare and the automotive industry. McCrory has worked in organizational change functions, and has delivered complex business transformation projects and programs in Europe and Canada.
An Irish man by birth, McCrory studied International Business and Spanish at Liverpool John Moores University, after which he completed a 17-year career in the Royal Air Force as a Helicopter Weapon Systems Officer that saw him fly around the world on operations.
When he was not flying, McCrory earned his colours representing the Air Force in triathlon, swimming, waterpolo and rowing. Towards the end of his Air Force service, McCrory completed a Masters Degree in Sport and Exercise Science, wholly intent on a second career in sport. Coupling his business experiences since leaving the military, McCrory brings an applied understanding of commercial leadership and the science of sport to the helm of Triathlon Canadas Board of Directors. McCrory emigrated to Calgary in February 2011.
My years of flying with the military taught me two valuable lessons that I use each day in my professional life: the importance of respecting yourself and your team, and the need to get people focused on delivering the highest possible standard, said McCrory. In the air force, we would always aim to be on time and on target when we were executing flying missions, striving for nothing less than high performance. And one of the greatest keys to success I took out of the military is the importance of getting people engaged on the achievement of the same common goal.
We have a great team in place at Triathlon Canada and incredibly supportive sponsors. I am excited to continue working with our Board of Directors, the experienced professionals we have on staff at the national office and in each of our provinces, as well as our sport and government partners to accomplish our collective goals of building Triathlon Canada into a world-leading sport organization.
McCrory replaces Les Pereira who stepped down from the Board of Directors last week.
