A team of six swimmers represented Canada at the 2025 Youth Parapan American Games in Santiago, Chile, a stepping stone for the next generation of Para swimmers. Guided by team leader Janet Dunn, head coach Ryan Allen and team manager Joy Fanara, the group delivered strong performances and showcased their hard work and determination.
Alyssa Smyth of the Orangeville (Ont.) Otters led the way with four gold medals. The 15-year-old was victorious in the 50 free, 100 free, 100 breast and 100 fly. Fellow 15-year-old Veronica MacLellan of the Charlottetown Bluephins also won gold in 100 back and added bronze in the 50 free. Roy Pan, 18, of Victoria’s Pacific Coast Swimming earned silver in the 50 fly with Lucas Van Herk, 17, of Spartan Swim Club in Chilliwack, B.C., capturing bronze in the 200 free.
While the team had a strong showing, coaches saw this as an opportunity for growth and long-term development. With such a young team, the competition allowed athletes to improve their skills, gain international experience and use it as a chance to learn.
Jocelyn Jay, Associate High Performance Director, Paralympic Program, said the event plays a crucial role in the swimmers’ development.
“We’re proud of the six young athletes who represented Canada at the Youth Parapan American Games in Santiago,” she said. “Youth events like this provide valuable experience and perspective as they continue their development towards 2032. Our partnership with the Canadian Paralympic Committee helps create these important learning moments that build confidence and readiness for what’s ahead.”
As the next generation of swimmers continue their development, the Youth Parapan American Games experience lays the foundation for international success and long-term growth in Canada’s Paralympic Program.
