SHERBROOKE – The 2025 Speedo Canadian Short Course Championships happening this week at the Centre sportif de l’Université de Sherbrooke are off to a strong start with swimmers showing up and lowering numerous records today.
Swimmers of the national para swimming team are finalizing their preparation for the 2025 World Para Swimming Championships in Singapore and proving they are ready to compete in September.
Danielle Dorris from Codiac Vikings Aquatic Club lowered the world record twice today in her best event, the S7 50-m butterfly. The 22-year-old triple Paralympian swam the even in 33.11 in the finals, .27 seconds faster than her previous world record established in the prelims.
On the men’s side, Nicolas-Guy Turbide, from Club de natation région de Québec, lowered the Americas’ record in the 100-m backstroke S13 in 58.69. The previous record of 59.30 had been established by Canadian Brian Hill in 2009. Riley Martin, from KISU Swim Club, broke the Canadian record in the men’s S4 100-m medley in 2:08.18.
From the Olympic program, Bianca Baccus (Pointe Claire Swim Club) was the youngest swimmer to qualify for a final on day 1 at only 13 years old. She lowered her personal best twice in the 100-m medley and placed third in the B final in 1:05.02. Seo-Yeong Kim, from Toronto Swim Club, was the only double champion of the evening after winning both the women’s 200-m freestyle and 100-m medley.
